Characterization of a Low-Cost, Monolithically Integrated, Tunable 10G Transmitter for Wavelength Agile PONs
摘要: Dynamically reconfigurable passive optical networks (PONs) using time-division multiplexing and dense wavelength division multiplexing will require low-cost, high-performance customer premises equipment to be economically viable. In particular, substantial cost savings can be achieved through the use of efficient re-growth free, foundry-compatible fabrication techniques. Using this strategy, this paper presents the first detailed characterization of a monolithically integrated transmitter comprised of a discretely tunable slotted Fabry–Pérot ridge waveguide laser, an absorptive modulator and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) produced using a standard off-the-shelf AlInGaAs/InP multiple quantum well epitaxial structure. This first generation device demonstrates a discrete single-mode tuning range of approximately 12 nm between 1551nm and 1563 nm with a side-mode suppression ratio ≥30 dB. Moreover, the integrated modulator section is shown to support transmission at 10 Gb/s using non-return to zero on-off keying with an extinction ratio in excess of 8 dB. Furthermore, using a time-resolved chirp measurement technique to examine dynamic deviations in the set carrier frequency, the modulator section exhibits a chirp contribution of <6 GHz using test patterns with high and low frequency content. In addition, the generation of optical bursts through the application of a gating function to the SOA section was found to shift the unmodulated carrier of a typical lasing mode by ≤8 GHz for gating periods comparable with a typical PON burst durations of 125 μs which are faster than the thermal response time of the transmitter material.

摘要: Point-to-multipoint architecture poses serious security problems to passive optical networks (PONs). In this paper, we propose the use of a new digital signal processing (DSP)-based technique to improve the confidentiality of signals traveling through PONs. The technique consists of phase-shifting and delaying the spectral components of baseband signals that further modulate optical carriers. Our simulation analysis encompasses the application of the technique to binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) in an intensity modulated- direct detection (IM-DD) system. Results reveal that the encrypted signals may be properly decoded even when 64 PON users are considered and suggest the potential of the proposed technique for practical implementations. From a security point of view, we show that the proposed technique utterly outperforms the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in brute force attacks.

Technology Roadmap for Time Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Networks (TDM PONs)
摘要: Commercial passive optical networks (PONs) up to 10 Gb/s have traditionally leveraged mature components from transport and metro transport systems. Starting soon with 25G PON, the data center ecosystem will be leveraged. A strategy to accommodate the higher speed of 25 Gb/s at low incremental cost to 10G PON is presented—essentially to adhere to a simple architecture and to avoid the need for expensive optical amplification. The 25G PON wavelength plan and co-existence scenarios with existing PONs are described. The ability of Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) PONs to address the 5G backhaul, midhaul and fronthaul transport use case is evaluated. The technology roadmap to a future 50G TDM PON is discussed. Analysis of the major challenge, meeting PON loss budgets at 50 Gb/s with higher launch power, is presented, including the cost dependence of transmitter power. This is followed by a short review of research in the field of coherent detection in PON systems, which will be important for 100G PON.

Applicability of small-signal laser and fiber models for passive optical networks operating at the 1550??nm window
摘要: Small-signal techniques are a useful engineering tool to estimate system performance, though small-signal models need to be tested against the large-signal from which they are derived. We show that combined small-signal models for lasers and optical fiber are valid for passive optical networks employing directly modulated semiconductor lasers, provided that the modulation extinction ratios are < 4 dB and the transmission distances < 25 km. For larger extinction ratios and longer transmission distances, large-signal approaches are needed in order to investigate system capabilities. The small-signal models break down due to the increasing adiabatic chirp in semiconductor lasers with increasing modulation current. We estimate how the small-signal models can estimate for the performance of 10 Gbit/s signal from directly modulated lasers. We verify the equivalence of the small-signal and large-signal regimes and we develop a quality metric to identify the range of fiber lengths and signal extinction ratios over which the small-regime remains valid.

Auto-Tuning PID Distributed Power Control for Next-Generation Passive Optical Networks
摘要: This work proposes an adaptive auto-tuning distributed power control strategy aided by proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and by Adaline artificial neural network (AANN) approaches. The power control mechanism is realized for the upstream of next-generation passive optical networks (NG-PON), primarily deployed in the context of optical code division multiplexing access passive networks. The primary results demonstrate the ability of control and adaptive auto-tuning of the proposed AANN-based DPCA, considering realistic error estimates in the optical channel. For the sake of comparison, an adaptive auto-tuning procedure through the Tyreus–Lyuben method is included, indicating superior Euclidean norm of the NMSE performance combined with the lower complexity of the proposed NN-based DPCA method.

Analysis of Four Wave Mixing Effects in 16 ??10 Gb/S WDM Optical Communication System
摘要: The fiber nonlinearities are one of the main performance limiting factors in any optical communication system. There are several parameters that effectively contribute in mitigation of these fiber nonlinearities such as fiber dispersion, effective area of fiber core, etc. Here, we have investigated the four wave mixing (FWM) nonlinear impairments in 16-channel WDM system. The FWM crosstalk becomes very critical to handle for long haul transmission systems at high power levels. Here, 16 channels WDM is being implemented and its performance is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER), Q factor, etc. for distance transmission upto 500 km.

摘要: Edge computing integrated passive optical networks have been gained more and more attention recently due to the high bandwidth and low latency for cloud services. In this paper, we study cooperative resource provisioning (CRP) among multiple cloudlets for one service because the resource capacity of each cloudlet is relatively limited comparing with the ever-increasing computation. We first formulate the CRP problem by ILP based on auction; then we design an auction-based scheme to motivate cloudlets to share their resources, which can be divided into two algorithms: CRP and TPD; finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our work by simulations.

摘要: This paper introduces a mechanism for the support of multi-ONU service level agreements (SLAs) in dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithms for Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON). The employment of SLAs for multiple optical network units (ONUs) instead of individual ONUs allows better utilization of the bandwidth reserved for these ONUs. The proposed DBA mechanism allows customers owning multiple ONUs to redistribute the aggregated bandwidth of the group of ONUs to better balance the bandwidth utilization. The proposed DBA can be employed in different use cases such as mobile backhauling/fronthauling, PON virtualization, and multi-site enterprise networking. Simulation results show that the proposed DBA improves the network performance.

摘要: In order to meet the traffic density requirement and cope with the technical challenges of hot-spot scenarios exhibiting extreme user density in very confined geographical areas, the fifth generation (5G) networks must undergo radical technological and architectural innovations that support a broad solution portfolio. This solution mix includes spectrum expansion to the millimeter Wave (mmWave) band, massive Multiple-Input Multiple- Output antennas and network densification through remote radio head deployment. Since the current Common Public Radio Interface-based mobile fronthaul cannot cope with massive mmWave multi-Gbps traffic streams, it is imperative to introduce a novel converged 5G architecture, specifically designed to facilitate mmWave access to massive amounts of users. To this end, a Medium Transparent Medium Access Control (MT-MAC) protocol has been proposed, designed to operate over a converged mmWave analog Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) fronthaul. MT-MAC allows for fast and direct negotiation of wavelength, radio frequency and time resources between the base band unit and the mmWave users, while offering fast on-demand link formation. However, its performance has not yet been evaluated under 5G heavy-traffic scenarios, as the ones previously described. Hence, in this paper, we investigate the performance of an MT-MAC-enabled fronthaul and report on its suitability for mmWave hot-spot 5G access networks.
