  • PEGylated polyethylenimine-stabilized polypyrrole nanoparticles loaded with DOX for chemo-photothermal therapy of cancer cells

    摘要: Combination of kinds of therapy modalities is promising for effective cancer treatment. Herein, a kind of multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) was developed for cancer chemo-photothermal therapy applications. Polypyrrole (PPy) NPs were formed using a facile polymerization method using poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) as stabilizer, followed by polyethylene glycol (PEG) modification and anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) loading. Showing obvious absorbance in the NIR range, the obtained PPy-PEI-PEG NPs displayed well photothermal ability with desirable photothermal stability. The release of the loaded DOX can be promoted by pH and laser stimulation. Compared with single therapy modality, the combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy showed higher cancer cell killing effect. The cellular internalization of the obtained NPs was proved to be effective. The developed multifunctional NPs are promising candidates for combined therapy of cancer cells.

  • Laser Ablation - From Fundamentals to Applications || Matrix-Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation of Organic Thin Films: Applications in Biology and Chemical Sensors

    摘要: Polymer and biomolecule processing for medical and electronics applications, i.e. the fabrication of sensors and biosensors, microarrays, or lab on chip devices is a cornerstone field which shows great promise. Laser based thin film deposition techniques such as pulsed laser deposition or matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) are competing with conventional methods for integrating new materials with tailored properties for novel technological developments. Successful polymer and protein thin film deposition requires several key elements for depositing viable and functional thin films, i.e. the characteristics of the laser depositing system, the choice of targets and receiver substrates, etc. This chapter reviews the following topics: brief presentation of the MAPLE process including several examples of polymer materials deposited by MAPLE, thus illustrating the potential of the technique as a gentle laser-assisted deposition method. In particular, the “synthesis” of new materials, their analysis and correlation of the bulk and interface properties to its bio-environment shall be discussed as a method to tackle some bioengineering issues. We will also focus on recent breakthroughs of the MAPLE technique for the fabrication of functional devices, i.e. sensor devices based either on chemoresponsive polymers or on proteins.

  • Thin film chemiresistive gas sensor on single-walled carbon nanotubes-functionalized with polyethylenimine (PEI) for $${\hbox {NO}}_{2}$$NO2 gas sensing

    摘要: Chemical detection of toxic gases, such as greenhouse gases is still very important as a research topic. To design gas sensor detectors based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with high sensitivity and selectivity for the toxic environment is a continuous process. The aim is to detect NO2 gas with better sensitivity. In the present work, the thin-film sensor is fabricated on SiO2 substrate and it is functionalized with polyethylenimine (PEI). It has been established that PEI functionalized SWCNTs (F-SWCNTs) show high sensitivity towards strong electron-withdrawing particles. It was found that at room temperature, SWCNTs-PEI functionalized gas sensor exhibited a higher sensitivity of 37.00% as compared with bare SWCNTs gas sensor. The gas sensor has shown the repeatable response for the entire concentration range studied. The sensing properties and the PEI functionalization duration effects on the behaviour of SWCNTs-based gas sensors were demonstrated.

  • Green fluorescent carbon quantum dots functionalized with polyethyleneimine, and their application to aptamer-based determination of thrombin and ATP

    摘要: Brightly fluorescent carbon quantum dots coated with polyethylenimine (PEI-CDs) were prepared using malic acid and PEI as the precursors. The PEI-CDs have a high quantum yield (41%) and green emission (peaking at 502 nm under 430 nm excitation), both of which are not affected by high ionic strength. The PEI-CDs have a positive charge at physiological pH values and can electrostatically bind aptamers with their negative charge. This is shown for aptamers binding thrombin or ATP. Binding of aptamers results in quenching of fluorescence. If thrombin or ATP are introduced, the respective aptamer will bind them, and the complex is then released from the PEI-CDs. Fluorescence increases in proportion to the analyte concentration. Under optimized conditions, thrombin and ATP can be sensitively and selectively detected by fluorometry with lower detection limits of 1.2 and 13 nM, respectively. The assay was successfully applied to the determination of thrombin and of ATP in spiked serum samples.

  • Antimony doped tin oxide/polyethylenimine electron selective contact for reliable and light soaking-free high performance inverted organic solar cells

    摘要: We have demonstrated a high-performance low temperature solution processed electron selective contact consisting of 10 at. % antimony doped tin oxide (ATO) and the neutral polymer polyethylenimine (PEI). Inverted organic photovoltaics (OPVs) utilizing ATO/PEI as electron selective contact exhibited high power conversion efficiencies for both the reference P3HT:PCBM and the nonfullerene based P3HT:IDTBR active layer OPV material systems. Importantly, it is shown that the proposed ATO/PEI carrier selective contact provides light soaking-free inverted OPVs. Furthermore, by increasing the thickness of the ATO layer from 40 to 120 nm, the power conversion efficiency of the corresponding inverted OPVs remain unaffected, a parameter which indicates the potential of the proposed ATO/PEI carrier selective contact for high performance light-soaking-free and reliable roll-to-roll printing solutions processed inverted OPVs.
