  • Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for multimode polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings

    摘要: For strain sensing applications, we develop a simple and accurate Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in multimode optical fibers. As multimode FBG spectra generally exhibit multiple peaks, simply tracking some particular spectral peaks (i.e., maximum detection) results in measurement failure when the strain is large. Here, using an FBG inscribed in a perfluorinated graded-index multimode polymer optical fiber, we experimentally evaluate the new method by comparing its performance with those of other demodulation algorithms, such as the maximum and centroid detection methods. Finally, using this method, we demonstrate the accurate measurement of strain of up to 1.0%.

  • Experimental Analysis of Bragg Reflection Peak Splitting in Gratings Fabricated Using a Multiple Order Phase Mask

    摘要: We performed an experimental analysis of the effect of phase mask alignment on the Bragg grating reflection spectra around the wavelength of λB = 1560 nm fabricated in polymer optical fiber by using a multiple order phase mask. We monitored the evolution of the reflection spectra for different values of the angle φ by describing the tilt between the phase mask and the fiber. We observed that the peak at λB is split into five separate peaks for the nonzero tilt and that separation of the peaks increases linearly with φ. Through comparison with theoretical data we were able to identify the five peaks as products of different grating periodicities, which are associated with the interference of different pairs of diffraction orders on the phase mask.

  • Accidental contamination of substrates and polymer films by organic quantum emitters

    摘要: We report the observation of ubiquitous contamination of dielectric substrates and polymethylmethacrylate matrices by organic molecules with optical activity in the visible spectral range. Contamination sites of individual solvent-related fluorophores in thin films of polymethylmethacrylate constitute fluorescence hotspots with quantum emission statistics and quantum yields approaching 30% at cryogenic temperatures. Our findings not only resolve prevalent puzzles in the assignment of spectral features to various nanoemitters on bare dielectric substrates or in polymer matrices, they also identify means for simple and cost-efficient realization of single-photon sources in the visible spectral range.

  • Polymer spacer tunable Purcell-enhanced spontaneous emission in perovskite quantum dots coupled to plasmonic nanowire networks

    摘要: Polymer spacer tunable Purcell-enhanced spontaneous emission in perovskite quantum dots coupled to plasmonic nanowire networks? Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have recently been proposed as a scalable and color-tunable quantum source, but their slow spontaneous emission creates a mismatch with high-speed nanophotonic devices. Here, we demonstrate fast and bright emission in PQD films coupled to silver nanowire networks (NWKs), in which polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is used as a spacer to regulate the lossy characteristics of the plasmonic cavity. Compared with bare quartz, the PVA substrate shows a considerable enhancement effect on the apparent emission intensity, but a reduction in the emission rate of PQD excitons. The efficient NWK–PQD coupling generates an increase in the emission intensity of a factor of 6.0 (average 3.4) and simultaneously a 2.4-fold (average 1.9) enhancement in the emission rate. However, an opposite PVA spacer thickness dependence for Purcell factor and quantum yield is observed, indicating that the fast and bright emission would be a trade-off between the Purcell-enhanced radiative rate and large metal guidance on plasmonic cavity design for perovskite-based nanophotonic devices.

  • Self-Assembled Nanostructures of Red Fluorescent Amphiphilic Block Copolymers as Both Imaging Probes and Drug Carriers

    摘要: We report a red-?uorescent drug delivery system formed by biodegradable and biocompatible amphiphilic A-B-A block copolymers. Each polymer consists of a red ?uorescent dye covalently bonded in the middle of hydrophobic block (B) of polylactone, tethered at both ends with poly[(oligo ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA) as the hydrophilic block. Two types of polylactones, i.e., semicrystalline poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and amorphous poly(δ-decalactone) (PDL), respectively, were incorporated as the hydrophobic segment in the block copolymers. Using transmission electron microscopy, we characterized the self-assembled nanostructures formed by these amphiphilic block copolymers in mixtures of water/tetrahydrofuran or water/dimethylformamide. All of these polymers remained highly ?uorescent in water, although some extent of aggregation-induced ?uorescence quenching was still observed. Among the three types of polymers presented here, the polymer (RPO-3) containing an amorphous block of PDL showed the highest drug-loading capacity and the largest extent of drug release in acidic media. RPO-3 micelles loaded with doxorubicin as a model of anticancer drug showed sustainable intracellular release and cytotoxicity against HeLa cells.

  • Keyhole cutting of carbon fiber reinforced polymer using a long-duration nanosecond pulse laser

    摘要: The machining performance of a high-energy nanosecond pulse laser with a near-infrared wavelength is investigated for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) with two different fiber arrangements. This research work demonstrates for the first time that a keyhole mode cutting can be achieved for CFRP materials using a high-energy nanosecond pulse laser of a Long Pulse mode (120 ns). Specifically, it is shown that the short-duration Q-Switch mode (8 ns) results in ineffective material removal for CFRP, despite much higher peak laser power intensity than the Long Pulse mode. In Long Pulse mode, multi-pass straight line and contour cutting experiments are further performed to investigate the effect of laser processing parameters and resultant machined surface integrity. Plasma absorption effects using both pulse modes are discussed. The results show that a 2.2 mm thick cross-ply CFRP panel can be cut through using as few as 6 laser passes, and a high-quality machined surface can be produced with a limited heat-affected zone and minimal fiber pull-out using Argon assist gas. The successful outcomes from this work provide the key to enable efficient CFRP laser machining using high-energy nanosecond pulse lasers, and offer insight into the unique energy absorption mechanisms for CFRP laser machining.

  • Ferroelectric Enhanced Performance of a GeSn/Ge Dual-Nanowire Photodetector

    摘要: GeSn offers a reduced bandgap than Ge and has been utilized in Si-based infrared photodetectors with extended cutoff wavelength. However, traditional GeSn/Ge heterostructure usually consists defects like misfit dislocations due to the lattice mismatch issue. The defects with the large feature size of photodetector fabricated on bulk GeSn/Ge heterostructure induces considerable dark current. Here, we demonstrate a flexible GeSn/Ge dual-nanowire (NW) structure, in which the strain relaxation is achieved by the elastic deformation without introducing defects and the feature dimension is naturally at nanoscale. Photodetector with low dark current can be built on GeSn/Ge dual-NW, which exhibits an extended detection wavelength beyond 2 μm and the enhanced responsivity compared to Ge NW. Moreover, the dark current can be further suppressed by the depletion effect from ferroelectric polymer side gate. Our work suggests the flexible GeSn/Ge dual-NW may open an avenue for Si-compatible optoelectronic circuits operating in the short-wavelength infrared range.

  • Effect of electron beam irradiation on structure, morphology, and optical properties of PVDF-HFP/PEO blend polymer electrolyte films

    摘要: The effect of 8 MeV energy electron beam (EB) on poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) (@ w/w 90:10, PHP10) polymer blend films have been prepared and studied. The change in structure, morphology, and optical properties at 40, 80, and 120 kGy EB doses were investigated. The effect of the radiation process may responsible to occurs the degradation (chain scission) and chain link (cross linking) which are confirmed by the FT-IR analysis. The band at 1401 cm?1 corresponding to the –CH2– bending or scission mode have shifted to 1397 cm?1 after 120 kGy EB dose is due to the intermolecular interaction and the changes of the macromolecular chain by breaking of bonds with increased EB dose was observed. The XRD pattern shows decreased in the crystallinity from 60.03 to 23.42% and increased amorphousity for 120 kGy EB dose the and the surface morphology was drastically changed by decreasing the size of spherulites upon increased EB dose. The increase in optical absorption and the shifting of wavelength toward a higher end (red shift) was observed after the irradiation. The energy band gaps (Eg), and Urbach energy were estimated and they are found to be decreased, but the number of carbon atoms in a cluster of was increased with increased EB dose. The obtained results notice that the physical properties of polymer blend electrolytes can be improved by EB irradiation to use in different potential applications.

  • Photocatalytic properties of TiO2@Polymer and TiO2@Carbon aerogel composites prepared by atomic layer deposition

    摘要: Monolithic structured TiO2/aerogel composites were prepared from resorcinol-formaldehyde polymer aerogel (RFA) and its carbon aerogel (RFCA) derivative. A resorcinol-formaldehyde hydrogel was synthesized in a sol-gel reaction and transformed into polymer aerogel by supercritical drying. The RFA was converted to carbon aerogel by pyrolysis at 900 °C in dry N2. Amorphous and crystalline TiO2 layers were grown from TiCl4 and H2O precursors by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at 80 °C and 250 °C, respectively, on both RFA and RFCA. The substrates and the composites were studied by N2 adsorption, TG/DTA-MS, Raman, SEM-EDX and TEM techniques. Their photocatalytic activity was compared in the UV catalyzed decomposition reaction of methyl orange dye.

  • Steady Enhancement in Photovoltaic Properties of Fluorine Functionalized Quinoxaline-Based Narrow Bandgap Polymer

    摘要: To investigate the influence of fluoride phenyl side-chains onto a quinoxaline (Qx) unit on the photovoltaic performance of the narrow bandgap (NBG) photovoltaic polymers, herein, two novel NBG copolymers, PBDTT-DTQx and PBDTT-DTmFQx, were synthesized and characterized. 2-ethylhexylthiothiophene-substituted benzodithiophene (BDTT), 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline (DQx) [or 2,3-bis(3-fluorophenyl)quinoxaline (DmFQx)] and 2-ethylhexylthiophene (T) were used as the electron donor (D) unit, electron-withdrawing acceptor (A) unit and π-bridge, respectively. Compared to non-fluorine substituted PBDTT-DTQx, fluoride PBDTT-DTmFQx exhibited a wide UV-Vis absorption spectrum and high hole mobility. An enhanced short-circuit current (Jsc) and fill factor (FF) simultaneously gave rise to favorable efficiencies in the polymer/PC71BM-based polymer solar cells (PSCs). Under the illumination of AM 1.5G (100 mW cm?2), a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.40% was achieved with an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.87 V, a Jsc of 12.0 mA cm?2 and a FF of 61.45% in PBDTT-DTmFQx/PC71BM-based PSCs, while PBDTT-DTQx-based devices also exhibited a PCE of 5.43%. The excellent results obtained demonstrate that PBDTT-DTmFQx by fluorine atom engineering could be a promising candidate for organic photovoltaics.
