  • The Clinical Application of Fluorescence-Guided Surgery in Head and Neck Cancer

    摘要: Although surgical resection has been the primary treatment modality of solid tumors for decades, surgeons still rely on visual cues and palpation to delineate healthy from cancerous tissue. This may contribute to the high rate (up to 30%) of positive margins in head and neck cancer resections. Margin status in these patients is the most important prognostic factor for overall survival. In addition, second primary lesions may be present at the time of surgery. Although often unnoticed by the medical team, these lesions can have significant survival ramifications. We hypothesize that real-time fluorescence imaging can enhance intraoperative decision-making by aiding the surgeon in detecting close or positive margins and visualizing unanticipated regions of primary disease. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical utility of real-time fluorescence imaging for intraoperative decision-making. Methods: Head and neck cancer patients (n=14) scheduled for curative resection were enrolled in a clinical trial evaluating panitumumab-IRDye800CW for surgical guidance (NCT02415881). Open-field fluorescence imaging was performed throughout the surgical procedure. The fluorescence signal was quantified as signal-to-background ratios to characterize the fluorescence contrast of regions of interest relative to background. Results: Fluorescence imaging was able to improve surgical decision-making in three cases (21.4%); identification of a close margin (n=1) and unanticipated regions of primary disease (n=2). Conclusion: This study demonstrates the clinical applications of fluorescence imaging on intraoperative decision-making. This information is required for designing phase III clinical trials using this technique. Furthermore, this study is the first to demonstrate this application for intraoperative decision-making during resection of primary tumors.

    摘要: This task force paper summarizes the state-of-the-art real-time digital simulation concepts and technologies that are used for the analysis, design, and testing of the electric power system and its apparatus. This paper highlights the main building blocks of the real-time simulator, i.e., hardware, software, input-output systems, modeling, and solution techniques, interfacing capabilities to external hardware and various applications. It covers the most commonly used real-time digital simulators in both industry and academia. A comprehensive list of the real-time simulators is provided in a tabular review. The objective of this paper is to summarize salient features of various real-time simulators, so that the reader can benefit from understanding the relevant technologies and their applications, which will be presented in a separate paper.

  • Intelligent photovoltaic panels based on solar tracking

    摘要: The transformation of solar energy into electricity using photovoltaic cells has many economic and environmental benefits. As this technology reduces dependence on non-renewable energy sources, many developed and developing countries near the equator are increasingly willing to adopt such energy generation techniques. Its tilt angle with the horizontal plane and its orientation determines the photovoltaic panel (PV) yield. Thus the solar energy obtained from traditional photovoltaic panels can be maximized by replacing them with Intelligent photovoltaic panels. The Intelligent Photovoltaic panels adjust its orientation as well as tilt angle automatically with changing sun direction to receive maximum possible solar energy on its surface. A handful of studies on the orientation of tilt angle and its optimization have been conducted to improve the yield of photovoltaic panels; however, no solution has been proposed to estimate the optimum value of the parameters based on real-time monitoring.

    摘要: Real-time (RT) simulation is a highly reliable simulation method that is mostly based on electromagnetic transient simulation of complex systems comprising many domains. It is increasingly used in power and energy systems for both academic research and industrial applications. Due to the evolution of the computing power of RT simulators in recent years, new classes of applications and expanded fields of practice could now be addressed with RT simulation. This increase in computation power implies that models can be built more accurately and the whole simulation system gets closer to reality. This Task Force paper summarizes various applications of digital RT simulation technologies in the design, analysis, and testing of power and energy systems.

    摘要: Terahertz (THz) cameras comprising an uncooled micro-bolometer array have been developed for simple THz imaging, and the improvement of their sensitivity is one of the important issues. We fabricated a new micro-bolometer array with a resonant cavity structure for a real-time THz camera, alongside a new method for evaluating the sensitivity across a wide range of the THz frequency region. The frequency dependence of the sensitivity of the THz camera is measured in the 0.5–2.0-THz frequency range taking the polarization dependence into account. It was found that the resonant cavity structure effectively increased the sensitivity of the THz camera, and, actually, the improvement by one order of magnitude was achieved in the frequency range below 1 THz. The THz camera with much enhanced sensitivity will expand the frontiers of real-time THz imaging such as molecular imaging and nondestructive inspection.

    摘要: Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) integrate discrete-time computing and continuous-time physical-world entities, which are often wirelessly interlinked. The use of wireless safety-critical CPS requires safety guarantees despite communication faults. This paper focuses on one important set of such safety rules: Proper-Temporal-Embedding (PTE), where distributed CPS entities must enter/leave risky states according to properly nested temporal pattern and certain duration spacing. Our solution introduces hybrid automata to formally describe and analyze CPS design patterns. We propose a novel leasing based design pattern, along with closed-form configuration constraints, to guarantee PTE safety rules under arbitrary wireless communication faults. We propose a formal procedure to transform the design pattern hybrid automata into specific wireless CPS designs. This procedure can effectively isolate physical world parameters from affecting the PTE safety of the resultant specific designs. We conduct two wireless CPS case studies, one on medicine and the other on control, to show that the resulted system is safe against communication failures. We also compare our approach with a polling based approach. Both approaches support PTE under arbitrary communication failures. The polling approach performs better under severely adverse wireless medium conditions; while ours performs better under benign or moderately adverse wireless medium conditions.

    摘要: This paper proposes a photovoltaic power generation forecasting model which improves Multiple Linear Regression method (MLRM) with real-time correction term traditional day-ahead, hourly power (RCT). Firstly, a generation prediction model is developed by MLRM based on qualitative variables (hour, month, weather type), quantitative variable (solar radiation intensity) and physical characteristics of interactions between the variables. Secondly, an improved is presented which adds a model named MLRM+RCT correction term based on shorter real-time measured power data to MLRM to reduce the hourly prediction errors of MLRM. MLRM+RCT is tested based on power generation data released by IEEE Energy Forecasting Group in 2014. The results show that the performance of MLRM+RCT is better than that of MLRM and a benchmark method called exponential smoothing method.

    摘要: Industrial networks demand centrally controlled quality of service (QoS), often in the form of hard real-time guarantees. Software-defined networking (SDN) provides a convenient paradigm for central QoS control. However, existing SDN-based solutions cannot guarantee hard real-time QoS as they rely on a control loop over the forwarding (data) and control planes. We propose a novel SDN-based QoS control framework that maintains an accurate network model through network calculus to avoid a control loop over forwarding and control planes, allocates resources to and routes flows over a network of “queue links,” whereby each physical network link houses multiple queue links (with different QoS levels), and manages QoS through a function split between delay-constrained least-cost routing on the network of queue links and the resource allocation to the queue links. This function split greatly reduces the computational complexity while achieving hard real-time QoS with high bandwidth utilization. Our evaluation results indicate that our function split approach allows for online runtime admission control and can achieve bandwidth utilization above 80% while meeting deterministic real-time QoS requirements.

    摘要: The design and real-time hardware-in-the-loop implementation of a hybrid synchrophasors and GOOSE-based automatic synchronization algorithm are presented in this paper. Automatic synchronization is performed by utilizing the synchrophasor measurements from two commercial phasor measurement units (PMUs), while the coordinated control commands to automatic voltage regulator and/or turbine governor control and trip command to the circuit breaker are issued using IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE messages. The algorithm is deployed inside the PMU using the protection logic equations, and direct communication between the PMUs is established to minimize the communication latencies. In addition, the algorithm is tested using a standard protection relay test-set, and automatic test sequences are executed to validate its performance. It is concluded that the hybrid synchrophasor and GOOSE-based automatic synchronization scheme ensures minimum communication latencies, reduces equipment cost, facilitates interoperability, and performs automatic reconnection adequately.

  • High-Performance Emulator for Fixed Photovoltaic Panels

    摘要: This paper presents the design and implementation of a photovoltaic emulator, based on an accurate mathematical model of a photovoltaic panel, instead of the look-up table method. The latter requires more memory for increasing accuracy and considering all the desired environmental situations. Furthermore, the proposed approach takes into account the incidence solar angle, as an input parameter, to offer the possibility of evaluating daily losses for different values of tilt angle. The validation of the proposed emulator is carried out by comparing in real-time, both the studied panel output and the emulator output, under variable load, temperature, and irradiation levels. The emulator is able to operate online with connected solar radiation and temperature sensors or offline with recorded measurement vectors. The practical tests were performed on a prototype designed using a MATLAB C MEX S-function, dSPACE board 1104, and a controlled DC/DC converter. The results showed that the emulator was able to behave accurately as the studied photovoltaic panel.
