  • Unexpected robustness of the band gaps of TiO <sub/>2</sub> under high pressures

    摘要: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a wide band gap semiconducting material which is promising for photocatalysis. Here we present first-principles calculations to study the pressure dependence of structural and electronic properties of two TiO2 phases: the cotunnite-type and the Fe2P-type structure. The band gaps are calculated using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation, as well as the many-body perturbation theory with the GW approximation. The band gaps of both phases are found to be unexpectedly robust across a broad range pressures. The corresponding pressure coefficients are significantly smaller than that of diamond and silicon carbide, whose pressure coefficient is the smallest value ever measured by experiment. The robustness originates from the synchronous change of valence band maximum and conduction band minimum with nearly identical rates of changes. A step-like jump of band gaps around the phase transition pressure point is expected and understood in light of the difference in crystal structures.

    摘要: It is of significant importance for any classification and recognition system, which claims near or better than human performance to be immune to small perturbations in the dataset. Researchers found out that neural networks are not very robust to small perturbations and can easily be fooled to persistently misclassify by adding a particular class of noise in the test data. This, so-called adversarial noise severely deteriorates the performance of neural networks, which otherwise perform really well on unperturbed dataset. It has been recently proposed that neural networks can be made robust against adversarial noise by training them using the data corrupted with adversarial noise itself. Following this approach, in this paper, we propose a new mechanism to generate a powerful adversarial noise model based on K-support norm to train neural networks. We tested our approach on two benchmark datasets, namely the MNIST and STL-10, using muti-layer perceptron and convolutional neural networks. Experimental results demonstrate that neural networks trained with the proposed technique show significant improvement in robustness as compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

    摘要: One of the main vulnerabilities of GNSS receivers jamming is their exposure to intentional or unintentional signals, which could even cause service unavailability. Several alternatives to counteract these effects were proposed in the literature, being the most promising those based on multiple antenna architectures. This is specially the case for high-grade receivers used in applications requiring reliability and robustness. This article provides an overview of the possible receiver architectures encompassing antenna arrays and the associated signal processing techniques. Emphasis is also put on the most typical implementation issues found when dealing with such technology. A thorough survey is complemented with a set of experiments, including real data processing by a working prototype, which exemplifies the above ideas.

  • Correlations between lignin content and structural robustness in plants revealed by X-ray ptychography

    摘要: Lignin is a heterogeneous aromatic polymer responsible for cell wall stiffness and protection from pathogen attack. However, lignin represents a bottleneck to biomass degradation due to its recalcitrance related to the natural cell wall resistance to release sugars for fermentation or further processing. A biological approach involving genetics and molecular biology was used to disrupt lignin pathway synthesis and decrease lignin deposition. Here, we imaged three-dimensional fragments of the petioles of wild type and C4H lignin mutant Arabidopsis thaliana plants by synchrotron cryo-ptychography. the three-dimensional images revealed the heterogeneity of vessels, parenchyma, and fibre cell wall morphologies, highlighting the relation between disturbed lignin deposition and vessel implosion (cell collapsing and obstruction of water flow). We introduce a new parameter to accurately define cell implosion conditions in plants, and we demonstrate how cryo-ptychographic X-ray computed tomography (cryo-PXCT) provides new insights for plant imaging in three dimensions to understand physiological processes.

    摘要: Embedded software is at the core of current and future telecommunication, automotive, multimedia, and industrial automation systems. The success of practically any industrial application depends on the embedded software system’s dependability, and one method to verify the dependability of a system is testing its robustness. The motivation behind this paper is to provide a knowledge base of the state of the practice in robustness testing of embedded software systems and to compare this to the state of the art. We have gathered the information on the state of the practice in robustness testing from seven different industrial domains (telecommunication, automotive, multimedia, critical infrastructure, aerospace, consumer products, and banking) by conducting 13 semi-structured interviews. We investigate the different aspects of robustness testing, such as the general view of robustness, relation to requirements engineering and design, test execution, failures, and tools. We highlight knowledge from the state of the practice of robustness testing of embedded software systems. We found different robustness testing practices that have not been previously described. This paper shows that the state of the practice, when it comes to robustness testing, differs between organizations and is quite different from the state of the art described in the scienti?c literature. For example, methods commonly described in the literature (e.g., the fuzzy approach) are not used in the organizations we studied. Instead, the interviewees described several ad hoc approaches that take speci?c scenarios into account (e.g., power failure or overload). Other differences we found concern the classi?cation of robustness failures, the hypothesized root causes of robustness failures, and the types of tools used for robustness testing. This paper is a ?rst step in capturing the state of the practice of robustness testing of embedded software systems. The results can be used by both researchers and practitioners. Researchers can use our ?ndings to understand the gap between the state of the art and the state of the practice and develop their studies to ?ll this gap. Practitioners can also learn from this knowledge base regarding how they can improve their practice and acquire other practices.

  • Mechanically Robust All-Polymer Solar Cells from Narrow Band Gap Acceptors with Hetero-Bridging Atoms

    摘要: A series of polymer acceptors PF2-DTC, PF2-DTSi, and PF2-DTGe with identical molecular backbone but different central bridging atoms in tricyclic-fused donor units were developed. In all-PSCs, the PF2-DTSi-based blend film exhibited excellent mechanical robustness with an impressively high PCE of up to 10.77%. Moreover, the flexible solar cell based on this blend retained >90% of its initial PCE after bending and relaxing 1,200 times at a bending radius of ~4 mm.

  • A New Local Knowledge-Based Collaborative Representation for Image Recognition

    摘要: Recently, collaborative representation based classifiers (CRC) have shown outstanding performances in recognition tasks. The key to success of most CRC algorithms states that the testing samples can be coded well by a suitable dictionary globally, while the local knowledge between samples has not been fully considered. We observe that the representations of similar samples have a high degree of similarity. In order to take advantage of this important similarity information, this paper proposes a new local knowledge-based collaborative representation model for image classification. Specifically, certain adjacent training samples of the testing image should be determined firstly, and then the representations of these neighborhoods can be applied to guide the coefficients of the testing samples to be more discriminative. Further, we derive a robust version of the proposed method to treat the face recognition with occlusions or corruptions. Extensive experiments are carried out to show the superiority of the proposed method over other state-of-the-art classifiers on various image recognition tasks.

  • Principles for Sensitive and Robust Biomolecular Interaction Analysis: The Limits of Detection and Resolution of Diffraction-Limited Focal Molography

    摘要: Label-free biosensors enable the monitoring of biomolecular interactions in real time, which is key to the analysis of the binding characteristics of biomolecules. While refractometric optical biosensors such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are sensitive and well-established, they are susceptible to any change of the refractive index in the sensing volume caused by minute variations in composition of the sample buffer, temperature drifts, and most importantly nonspecific binding to the sensor surface in complex fluids such as blood. The limitations arise because refractometric sensors measure the refractive index of the entire sensing volume. Conversely, diffractometric biosensors–for example, focal molography–only detect the diffracted light from a coherent assembly of analyte molecules. Thus any refractive index distribution that is noncoherent with respect to this molecular assembly does not add to the coherent signal. This makes diffractometric biosensors inherently robust and enables sensitive measurements without reference channels or temperature stabilization. The coherent assembly is generated by selective binding of the analyte molecules to a synthetic binding pattern–the mologram. Focal molography has been introduced theoretically [C. Fattinger, Phys. Rev. X 4, 031024 (2014)] and verified experimentally [V. Gatterdam, A. Frutiger, K.-P. Stengele, D. Heindl, T. Lübbes, J. V?r?s, and C. Fattinger, Nat. Nanotechnol. 12, 1089 (2017)] in previous papers. However, further understanding of the underlying physics and a diffraction-limited readout is needed to unveil its full potential. This paper introduces refined theoretical models, which can accurately quantify the amount of biological matter bound to the mologram from the diffracted intensity. In addition, it presents measurements of diffraction-limited molographic foci, i.e., Airy discs. These improvements enable us to demonstrate a resolution in real-time binding experiments comparable to the best SPR sensors without the need for temperature stabilization or drift correction and to detect low-molecular-weight compounds label free in an endpoint format. The presented experiments exemplify the robustness and sensitivity of the diffractometric sensor principle.

One of the worst scenarios occurs when these attacks are able to break the networks in different pieces/islands. Moreover, if the network is managed by a low number of controllers (which is the common case) these controllers could become isolated from the rest of the network causing a disruption in the service availability. We analyses different target attack scenarios and propose a more robust strategy to locate the controllers preserving the desired service availability level.
