  • Refractive Index Measurement of Lithium Ion Battery Electrolyte with Etched Surface Cladding Waveguide Bragg Gratings and Cell Electrode State Monitoring by Optical Strain Sensors

    摘要: In this scientific publication, a new sensor approach for status monitoring, such as state of charge and state of health, of lithium ion batteries by using special Bragg gratings inscribed into standard optical glass fibers is presented. In addition to well-known core gratings, embedded into the anode of 5 Ah lithium ion pouch cells as a strain monitoring unit, the manufacturing of a surface cladding waveguide Bragg grating sensor incorporated into the cell’s separator, that is sensitive to changes of the refractive index of the surrounding medium, is demonstrated. On the basis of the experiments carried out, characteristics of the cell behavior during standard cyclization and recognizable marks in subsequent post-mortem analyses of the cell components are shown. No negative influence on the cell performance due to the integrated sensors have been observed; however, the results show a clear correlation between fading cell capacity and changes of the interior optical signals. Additionally, with the novel photonic sensor, variations in the electrolyte characteristics are determinable as the refractive index of the solution changes at different molar compositions. Furthermore, with the manufactured battery cells, abuse tests by overcharging were conducted, and it was thereby demonstrated how internal battery sensors can derive additional information beyond conventional battery management systems to feasibly prevent catastrophic cell failures. The result of the research work is an early stage photonic sensor that combines chemical, mechanical and thermal information from inside the cell for an enhanced battery status analysis.

  • A “turn-on” fluorometric assay for kanamycin detection by using silver nanoclusters and surface plasmon enhanced energy transfer

    摘要: A rapid method is described for the determination of the antibiotic kanamycin. It integrates a kanamycin-binding aptamer and surface plasmon enhanced energy transfer (SPEET) between DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AgNCs and AuNPs were selected as energy donor and energy acceptor, respectively. The aptamer was designed to regulate the energy transfer between AgNCs and AuNPs. The aptamer was adsorbed on the AuNPs. Upon addition of kanamycin, the aptamer-kanamycin complex is formed, and this results in the aggregation of the AuNPs in high salt concentration, the formation of a blue coloration, and in the suppression of the SPEET process. The fluorescence of the AgNCs (with excitation/emission peaks at 560/600 nm) is quenched by the aptamer protected AuNPs in absence of kanamycin. The fluorescence on addition of kanamycin increases linearly in the 5 to 50 nM concentration range, with a lower detection limit of 1.0 nM (at S/N = 3). The assay can be performed within 30 min. It was successfully applied to the determination of kanamycin in spiked milk samples, and recoveries ranged between 90.2 and 95.4%. Conceivably, the strategy has a wide potential for screening by simply changing the aptamer.

  • Enzyme-free fluorometric assay for chloramphenicol based on double stirring bar-assisted dual signal amplification

    摘要: An enzyme-free fluorometric assay is described that accomplishes dual signal amplification by making use of a two stirring bars. Two Y-shaped DNA probes were designed and placed on the bars. When the target (with chloramphenicol as model analyte) is added, it triggers target recycling and simultaneously catalyzes hairpin assembly (CHA). A large fraction of DNA primers is released by the analyte from the bar to the supernatant and open hairpins with G-quadruplex DNA sequence. The G-quadruplex can specifically bind thioflavin T (ThT) to emit fluorescence (with excitation/emission maxima at 445 and 485 nm) for quantification of chloramphenicol. An enzyme is not needed. ThT is added to the system as a fluorescent DNA probe. All this strongly reduces the cost for sensor construction and usage. The dual signal amplification steps occur simultaneously which reduces the detection time. The assay was successfully employed to the determination of CAP in spiked milk and fish samples within 60 min and with a 16 pM limit of detection (at S/N = 3).

  • Preparation of DNA functional phosphorescent quantum dots and application in melamine detection in milk

    摘要: Bio-functionalization of quantum dots (QDs) is of important value in practical applications. With single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) rich in thymine T and thioguanine G taken as the template, a new-type nanocomposite material (ssDNA-PQDs) synthesized from low-toxicity T-ssDNA functionalized Mn–ZnS and room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) QDs (PQDs) was prepared in this paper by optimizing synthesis conditions, and these ssDNA-PQDs could emit orange RTP signals at 590 nm. As these ssDNA-PQDs are rich in T sequences and T sequences can bond with melamine through the hydrogen-bond interaction, ssDNA-PQDs experience aggregation, thus causing phosphorescent exciton energy transfer (PEET) between ssDNA-PQDs of di?erent particle sizes and their RTP quenching. Based on this principle, an RTP detection method for melamine was established. The linear range and detection limit of the detection method are 0.005–6 mM and 0.0016 mM respectively. As this method is based on the RTP nature of ssDNA-PQDs, it can avoid disturbance from background ?uorescence and scattered light of the biological ?uid, and it is very suitable for melamine detection in the biological ?uid milk.

  • Temperature fiber sensing of Li-ion batteries under different environmental and operating conditions

    摘要: In this work, a network of fiber sensors has been developed for real time, in situ, and in operando multipoint monitoring the surface temperature distribution on a smartphone Li-ion battery (LiB). Different temperature and relative humidity conditions are considered, in order to mimic the LiB response in the dry, temperate, and cold climates. In total, the temperature variations that occur in five different locations of the LiB are monitored, during constant current charge and different discharge rates, under normal and abusive operating conditions, performing a thermal spatial mapping of the battery surface. In general, the sensors detect temperature variations according to the voltage signal change and faster variations of voltage usually translate in higher temperature rise at the LiB surface. For instance, under abusive discharge, where the voltage drop is fast, the temperature increases at least twice when compared to the normal operating conditions. Absolute temperature values as high as (65.0 ± 0.1) °C are detected by the optical sensor located near the electrodes, under the higher discharge rate (5.77 C) and dry climate. A thermal gradient is identified from the top to the bottom on the LiB surface during the experimental tests. A lower battery performance is observed when it operates under the cold climate, with maximum temperature variations of (30.0 ± 0.1) °C for the higher discharge rate. These results can be helpful to design of next generation of LiBs, improving a faster cooling in critical areas, in order to reduce accumulated heat and preventing consequences such as thermal runaway and failure.

  • Determination of 17β-estradiol by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy merged with hybridization chain reaction amplification on Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles

    摘要: The authors describe an aptamer-based assay for 17β-estradiol. It relies on the combined use of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and hybridization chain reaction (HCR). The aptamer against 17β-estradiol is applied as the recognition probes, and this results in excellent specificity. Specific recognition of target 17β-estradiol induce the freedom of DNA 2, which will open the stem-loop structure of probe 1 on the Au@Ag and form the partial dsDNA structure. With the nicking enzyme, the partial dsDNA will be hydrolyzed and the reside ssDNA on Au@Ag will form a small stem-loop structure. With the help of the other probe 2 modified Au@Ag and pre-immobilized probe 3 on the well of the microplate, an enzyme-free HCR can occur and tremendous Au@Ag can be assembled along the formed dsDNA in HCR, which can act as the excellent substrate for Raman measurement and greatly amplify the Raman signal of R6G on the Au@Ag. Afterwards, the key factor, ratio between probe 2-Au@Ag (P2) and probe1-Au@Ag (P1), affects the detection sensitivity is systematically optimized for the best sensing performance. The SERS signal of R6G, best measured at 1651 cm?1, increases linearly in the wide range from 1 pM to 10 nM. The detection limit can be as low as 0.1 pM.

  • Building a Fluorescent Aptasensor Based on Exonuclease-Assisted Target Recycling Strategy for One-Step Detection of T-2 Toxin

    摘要: In this work, a rapid and accurate assay was successfully developed for T-2 toxin detection based on exonuclease-catalyzed target recycling strategy. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were conjugated with T-2 aptamer and used as signal probes, while magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were conjugated with the complementary DNA of T-2 aptamer (cDNA) and used as capture probes. The results reveled that good linear correlation (R2 = 0.9988) was achieved for T-2 toxin detection over the concentration range of 0.1–100 ng/mL with a detection limit as low as 0.035 ng/mL (S/N = 3). In addition, the reliability of the proposed method was also applied to the determination of T-2 toxin contents in real food samples and the average recoveries ranged from 95.97 to 104.00%. The sensing platform developed in our study demonstrated great potential for simple and sensitive detection of T-2 toxin contents in food samples.

  • ObstacleWatch

    摘要: Walking while using a smartphone is becoming a major pedestrian safety concern as people may unknowingly bump into various obstacles that could lead to severe injuries. In this paper, we propose ObstacleWatch, an acoustic-based obstacle collision detection system to improve the safety of pedestrians who are engaged in smartphone usage while walking. ObstacleWatch leverages the advanced audio hardware of the smartphone to sense the surrounding obstacles and infers fine-grained information about the frontal obstacle for collision detection. In particular, our system emits well-designed inaudible beep signals from the smartphone built-in speaker and listens to the reflections with the stereo recording of the smartphone. By analyzing the reflected signals received at two microphones, ObstacleWatch is able to extract fine-grained information of the frontal obstacle including the distance, angle and size for detecting the possible collisions and to alert users. Our experimental evaluation under two real-world environments with different types of phones and obstacles shows that ObstacleWatch achieves over 92% accuracy in predicting obstacle collisions with distance estimation errors at about 2 cm. Results also show that ObstacleWatch is robust to different sizes of objects and is compatible to different phone models with low energy consumption.

    摘要: According to earlier studies conducted by the authors it was found that contactless fiber-optic sensors based on the magneto-optical Faraday effect (FOSF) in epitaxial films of iron garnet can be used for contactless monitoring of the status of control plate valves that regulate the flow of fire and explosion hazardous substances and operate over a wide temperature range. FOSF makes it possible to control the displacement and tilt angle of the valve regulating element (valve plate). However, at the moment there are no sufficiently accurate mathematical models for such FOSF. Studies have shown that the discrepancy between simulation results and experiments can reach 105%. The discrepancy between the results increases significantly when the FOSF is operated in a wide temperature range (from minus 196 to +80 °C). The low accuracy of the FOSF models does not make it possible to develop efficient means of compensating its intrinsic and complementary errors. The existing FOSF models are not sufficiently accurate, since they do not take into account: the distribution of the normal component of the magnetic field strength along the magneto-optical element (MOE) cross-section; the distribution of the optical radiation intensity along the MOE cross-section; optical absorption of the FOSF optical elements. According to the results of research carried out by the authors a set of mathematical models that takes into account the nonuniform distribution of the optical radiation intensity along the MOE cross-section, the nonuniform distribution of normal component of the magnetic field strength along the MOE cross-section, the optical absorption in FOSF optical elements and their temperature dependences was developed. This allowed us to significantly reduce the modelling error. The discrepancy between the results of mathematical modeling and experimental studies of FOSF prototypes does not exceed 7.2%.
