  • Enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity of graphene/Si hybrid waveguide

    摘要: In this work, we experimentally study the optical Kerr nonlinearities of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with enhanced self-phase modulation. In the case of CMOS compatible materials for nonlinear optical signal processing, Si and silicon nitride waveguides have been extensively investigated over the past decade. However, Si waveguides exhibit strong two-photon absorption (TPA) at telecommunication wavelengths, which leads to a signi?cant reduction of the nonlinear ?gure-of-merit (FOM). In contrast, a silicon nitride based material system usually suppresses the TPA but simultaneously leads to the reduction of Kerr nonlinearity by one order of magnitude. Here, we introduce a graphene/Si hybrid waveguide, which maintains the optical properties and CMOS compatibility of Si waveguides, while enhancing the Kerr nonlinearity, by transferring over to the top of the waveguides. The graphene/Si waveguides are measured to have an enhanced nonlinear parameter of 510 W(cid:2)1 m(cid:2)1, compared with that of the Si waveguide of 150 W(cid:2)1 m(cid:2)1. An enhanced nonlinear FOM of 2.48 6 0.25 has been achieved, which is four times larger than that of the Si waveguide of 0.6 6 0.1. This work reveals the potential application of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with high Kerr nonlinearity and FOM for nonlinear all-optical signal processing.

  • Dual-View Display Based on Spatial Psychovisual Modulation

    摘要: Dual-view display is a technology that provides two different views concurrently for different users on a single medium. We propose a dual-view display system, where users can see one view through a pair of specific glasses (called personal view) and see another view without the glasses (called shared view). The display technology can be of great use in practice. For instance, in the application of information security display, the user with the specific glasses can see the private information but bystanders can only see an unrelated/disguising view. The dual-view display is based on an information display technology called spatial psychovisual modulation (SPVM). The rationale behind SPVM is that modern displays have high resolutions and can provide information beyond what human visual system can resolve, i.e., modern displays have spatial psychovisual redundancy. The redundancy of high-resolution displays can be exploited to achieve dual-view or even multi-view display. In this paper, we introduce heuristic and iterative algorithms for the dual-view display. The iterative algorithm utilizes the Gaussian-like spatial integration window of human eyes. Compared with the heuristic algorithm, the iterative algorithm has significant improvements for the shared view with preference in percentage of 90.2% on average. This paper serves as a guidance for dual-view-based applications. Moreover, the method discussed in this paper can be also used to explore the temporal redundancy of displays.

    摘要: A set of FPGA software system for video signal processing circuit is designed in this paper. The system uses FPGA as the core logic control and uses high speed serial transceiver chip tlk2711 as the interface of data transmission. This paper describes the main components of the software and the realization method of the modular design of FPGA, and gives the simulation waveforms and debug results of the main modules. The test results show that the data transmission interfaces provided by the system have a data rate of 6.4Gbps, which can meet the testing requirements of the satellite camera video processing functions and greatly improve the data transmission rate and accuracy.

    摘要: In order to support, in a cost-effective way, the data capacity demand in the context of future 5G networks, a new set of advanced technologies need to be explored, as it is the case of space-division multiplexing (SDM) along with energy efficient coherent detection based modulation formats. This paper presents the recent results on enabled optical networks based on SDM for high capacity optical networks compatible with 5G network infrastructure and data center connectivity. In particular, we demonstrate the viability of using Long-Period Gratings (LPGs) in multi-core fibers (MCFs) to develop different components for multicore-based SDM systems, such as pump couplers and core/wavelength selective multi-core switches and couplers. Moreover, we also present and characterize the performance of different digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and subsystems supporting optical coherent detection in SDM systems.

    摘要: The pulse-by-pulse single-shot spectrum measurement for high-repetition rate optical pulses with femtosecond or picosecond pulse width is important for capturing non-repetitive and rare phenomena of substances. Conventional optical spectrum analyzers cannot acquire the spectrum for each pulse at high-repetition rate without missing due to the low processing speed. Several high-speed optical signal processing techniques can help to acquire pulse-by-pulse single-shot spectrum. The high-speed spectrum measurement using a fiber chromatic dispersion-based time stretch dispersive Fourier Transform (TS-DFT) technique is a powerful tool for such measurements. In this paper, we present a record pulse-by-pulse single-shot spectrum measurement for 1 GHz repetition-rate optical pulses with a less than 67-pm spectral resolution based on the TS-DFT technique.

  • High-spectral-efficiency 600-Gbps/carrier Transmission Using PDM-256QAM Format

    摘要: High-capacity carrier signals with high-order modulation are being considered for data center interconnection (DCI) applications as they can reduce the cost per bit by decreasing the number of devices and increasing fiber capacity. However, signal quality degradation due to device imperfections affecting the frequency response has limited the capacity per carrier of PDM-256QAM signals to under 400 Gbps. Here, it is possible to use a calibration method for dealing with device imperfections wherein a fixed equalizer separately calibrates the frequency response of the transmitter and receiver. Our previous study showed that PDM-256QAM signals at up to 48 GBaud could be transmitted over 100 km, while it used an experimental setup with total 3-dB analog bandwidth of 13 GHz and 20 GHz for transmitter and receiver, respectively. A micro-integrable tunable laser assembly (μITLA) with a typical linewidth of 20 kHz, maximum under 100 kHz. Actual data center interconnection (DCI) applications, however, are expected to use dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), so in this study, we examined transmission of 10-WDM 48-GBaud PDM-256QAM signals in a 50-GHz grid and evaluated the WDM penalties. The resulting spectral efficiency (SE) of 600-Gbps/carrier WDM transmissions was as high as 12.02 bit/s/Hz.

  • FPGA-Based Implementation of an Artificial Neural Network for Measurement Acceleration in BOTDA Sensors

    摘要: In recent years, using distributed fiber-optic sensors based on Brillouin scattering, for monitoring pipelines, tunnels, and other constructional structures have gained huge popularity. However, these sensors have a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which usually increases their measurement error. To alleviate this issue, ensemble averaging is used which improves the SNR but in return increases the measurement time. Reducing the noise by averaging requires hundreds or thousands of scans of the optical fiber; hence averaging is usually responsible for a large percent of the entire system latency. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on artificial neural network for SNR enhancement and measurement acceleration in distributed fiber-optic sensors based on the Brillouin scattering. Our method takes the noisy Brillouin spectrums and improves their SNR by 20 dB, which reduces the measurement time significantly. It also improves the accuracy of the Brillouin frequency shift estimation process and its latency by more than 50% in comparison with the state-of-the-art software and hardware solutions.

  • Ripple Suppression in Broadband Microwave Photonic Phase Shifter Frequency Response

    摘要: This paper presents a detailed investigation on the cause of ripples in the frequency response of a microwave photonic phase shifter implemented using a 90° hybrid coupler. It was found that an unwanted radio frequency (RF) modulation sideband is generated at the modulator output due to the 90° hybrid coupler amplitude and phase imbalance. This resulted in phase shifter output RF signal amplitude variation and phase deviation. Experimental results demonstrated that incorporating an optical filter in the phase shifter structure can reduce the amplitude variation and phase deviation from 4.2 dB to 2.2 dB and from ±12° to ±3.8°, respectively, over a wide frequency range. A comparison of the loss and the dynamic range of the microwave photonic phase shifter implemented using a 90° hybrid coupler with a conventional fiber optic link is also presented.

  • Microwave Photonic Signal Processing and Sensing Based on Optical Filtering

    摘要: Microwave photonics, based on optical filtering techniques, are attractive for wideband signal processing and high-performance sensing applications, since it brings significant benefits to the fields by overcoming inherent limitations in electronic approaches and by providing immunity to electromagnetic interference. Recent developments in optical filtering based microwave photonics techniques are presented in this paper. We present single sideband modulation schemes to eliminate dispersion induced power fading in microwave optical links and to provide high-resolution spectral characterization functions, single passband microwave photonic filters to address the challenges of eliminating the spectral periodicity in microwave photonic signal processors, and review the approaches for high-performance sensing through implementing microwave photonics filters or optoelectronic oscillators to enhance measurement resolution.

  • Detection and visualization of water surface three-wave resonance via a synthetic Schlieren method

    摘要: Three-wave resonance is one of the most fundamental energy-transfer mechanisms that can occur among weakly nonlinear surface waves. Here we show experimentally that if two source waves are propagating at an angle to each other, the conditions for three-wave resonances are satisfied and a third resultant wave is produced. We present 3D visualization of surface waves using the Free-Surface Synthetic Schlieren (FS-SS) method, which removes the need for the addition of a light-diffusing agent, thereby retaining the surface tension and viscous properties of water. For three triad frequencies, we compute the average temporal power spectral density (PSD) of the wave heights. The direction of wave propagation is visualized by integrating the temporal PSD and by obtaining the average spatial PSD for each triad. Our results are in good agreement with the theory.
