  • Smart Lighting Systems as a Demand Response Solution for Future Smart Grids

    摘要: Massive deployment of distributed and intermittent renewable energy sources cause instability in the power system because of the mismatch between the power generation and load consumption. In order to solve this problem, smart loads embedded with modern power electronic converters and communication devices are being developed. They are able to communicate with the utility and perform automatic demand response. In this paper, we propose a smart light-emitting diode (LED) driver for lighting. This smart LED driver adjusts its electricity usage in response to the utility without the expense of human visual comfort. To achieve this goal, a new control method is developed and a typical rate of change of LED power is determined through conducting a series of visual assessments with interviewees. An experimental smart LED driver is built to validate the new control method. Experimental report from the visual assessments has confirmed that the proposed control method can significantly reduce the light flickering caused by change of LED power.

    摘要: Researchers for decades have utilized solar radiation as a sustainable renewable energy source. In this regard, Photovoltaic (PV) panels are satisfying the production of green energy and clean power. Frequently, these panels need to install on rooftops outdoor fields for maximum sun light feeding, to electricity. However, such PV systems installations are prone to direct or indirect lightning strikes. Herein, an impulse generator is designed to produce 750 V pulses for low voltage side to test the validity of our proposed surge protective device (SPD) as type-2. Moreover, the impulse generator provides 1.2/50μs and 8/20μs normalized voltage and current pulses, respectively. This approach controls the over-voltage caused by indirect lightening and thus protect solar panel systems. Furthermore, in the design of SPD, different components such as gas-discharge tube, transient voltage suppresser, metal oxide Varistor and Zener diodes are used to manage the impulse voltage at acceptable level. These results further highlighting the validity of implemented hardware.

    摘要: The communication security issue brought by Smart Grid is of great importance and should not be ignored in backbone optical networks. With the aim to solve this problem, this paper firstly conducts deep analysis into the security challenge of optical network under smart power grid environment and proposes a so-called lightweight security signaling mechanism of multi-domain optical network for Energy Internet. The proposed scheme makes full advantage of current signaling protocol with some necessary extensions and security improvement. Thus, this lightweight security signaling protocol is designed to make sure the end-to-end trusted connection. Under the multi-domain communication services of smart power grid, evaluation simulation for the signaling interaction is conducted. Simulation results show that this proposed approach can greatly improve the security level of large-scale multi-domain optical network for smart power grid with better performance in term of connection success rate performance.

    摘要: Control and monitoring processes in the electric field are fundamental aspects in smart grid. Different attributes, systems and mechanisms are required in handling activities from transmission, distribution and consumer side of the electrical network based on advanced technologies. In Tanzania, there still exists manual operations on distribution side and very little on the transmission side. Agent based distributed system has been seen to work successfully which involves the use of artificial intelligence and autonomous actions during the operations and controlling activities. Therefore, in this manner, the generated model based on REPAST simulation tool for solar driven DC microgrid will be achieved to show features of control and monitoring the grid including load shedding technique and demand responses based on pricing. Furthermore, the design of the prototype based on the stated features will be implemented. The advantages and impact of the demonstration can be deployed and used in any community for the application of any renewable energy systems.

    摘要: This paper studies the electric vehicle (EV) charging scheduling problem to match the stochastic wind power. Besides considering the optimality of the expected charging cost, the proposed model innovatively incorporates the matching degree between wind power and EV charging load into the objective function. Fully taking into account the uncertainty and dynamics in wind energy supply and EV charging demand, this stochastic and multistage matching is formulated as a Markov decision process. In order to enhance the computational efficiency, the effort is made in two aspects. Firstly, the problem size is reduced by aggregating EVs according to their remaining parking time. The charging scheduling is carried out on the level of aggregators and the optimality of the original problem is proved to be preserved. Secondly, the simulation-based policy improvement method is developed to obtain an improved charging policy from the base policy. The validation of the proposed model, scalability, and computational efficiency of the proposed methods are systematically investigated via numerical experiments.

    摘要: We describe the general concept and practical feasibility of a dc-based open energy system (OES) that proposes an alternative way of exchanging intermittent energy between houses in a local community. Each house is equipped with a dc nanogrid, including photovoltaic panels and batteries. We extend these nanogrids with a bidirectional dc–dc converter and a network controller so that power can be exchanged between houses over an external dc power bus. In this way, demand-response fluctuations are absorbed not only by the local battery, but can be spread over all batteries in the system. By using a combination of voltage and current controlled units, we implemented a higher-level control software independent from the physical process. A further software layer for autonomous control handles power exchange based on a distributed multiagent system, using a peer-to-peer like architecture. In parallel to the software, we made a physical model of a four-node OES on which different power exchange strategies can be simulated and compared. First results show an improved solar replacement ratio, and thus a reduction of ac grid consumption thanks to power interchange. The concept’s feasibility has been demonstrated on the first three houses of a full-scale OES platform in Okinawa.

    摘要: The solar power penetration in distribution grids is growing fast during the last years, particularly at the low-voltage (LV) level, which introduces new challenges when operating distribution grids. Across the world, distribution system operators (DSO) are developing the smart grid concept, and one key tool for this new paradigm is solar power forecasting. This paper presents a new spatial–temporal forecasting method based on the vector autoregression framework, which combines observations of solar generation collected by smart meters and distribution transformer controllers. The scope is 6-h-ahead forecasts at the residential solar photovoltaic and medium-voltage (MV)/LV substation levels. This framework has been tested in the smart grid pilot of évora, Portugal, and using data from 44 microgeneration units and 10 MV/LV substations. A benchmark comparison was made with the autoregressive forecasting model (AR—univariate model) leading to an improvement on average between 8% and 10%.

  • Islanding operation scheme for DC microgrid utilizing pseudo Droop control of photovoltaic system

    摘要: The penetration levels of renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles are increasing with the increase in the demand to solve energy and environmental issues. These distributed generators and energy storages can be efficiently managed in a DC smart grid by coordinated control. This paper proposes novel management schemes for DC systems to improve the reliability of power supply and improve the introduction ratio of renewable energy sources (RES). The proposed DC smart grid includes multiple DC microgrids. These configurations and control systems must be designed on the assumption of islanding operation of DC systems. In the islanding power system with the high penetration of RES, not only the utilization of energy storage but also load shedding and RES control is important. Hence, an efficient control strategy by using a storage battery, fuel cell and electrolyzer units, heat pump units, and a photovoltaic (PV) system is presented for stable islanding operation of DC microgrid. As the most important concept, a pseudo Droop control is proposed that utilizes the characteristics of the PV module. The pseudo Droop control enables the PV system to suppress the output power properly by using a simple control system without the maximum power estimation. Fault ride through protection for DC system is also adapted to the DC distribution lines. The performance of the proposed DC smart grid is demonstrated through MATLAB?/Simscape ElectricalTM simulations. The simulation results show that the DC microgrid can maintain stable islanding operation under the proposed management schemes when faults occur in the DC distribution lines.

    摘要: This paper presents a novel energy-management method for a microgrid that includes renewable energy, diesel generators, battery storage, and various loads. We assume that the microgrid takes part in a pool market and responds actively to the electricity price to maximize its pro?t by scheduling its controllable resources. To address various uncertainties, a risk-constrained scenario-based stochastic programming framework is proposed using the conditional value at risk method. The designed model is solved by two levels of stochastic optimization methods. One level of optimization is to submit optimal hourly bids to the day-ahead market under the forecast data. The other level of optimization is to determine the optimal scheduling using the scenario-based stochastic data of the uncertain resources. The proposed energy management system is not only bene?cial for the microgrid and customers, but also applies the microgrid aggregator and virtual power plant. The results are shown to prove the validity of the proposed framework.

    摘要: This paper presents a signi?cant change in current electric power grid response and recovery schemes by developing a framework for proactive recovery of electric power assets with the primary objective of resiliency enhancement. Within the proposed framework, which can potentially present the next generation decision-making tool for proactive recovery, several coordinated models will be developed including: 1) the outage models to indicate the impact of hurricanes on power system components; 2) a stochastic pre-hurricane crew mobilization model for managing resources before the event; and 3) a deterministic post-hurricane recovery model for managing resources after the event. Proposed models will be extended to ensure applicability to a variety of electric power grids with different technologies and regulatory issues. The theoretical and practical implications of the developed models will push the research frontier of proactive response and recovery schemes in electric power grids, while its ?exibility will support application to a variety of infrastructures, in response to a wide range of extreme weather events and natural disasters.
