  • Low-phase noise 8.22 GHz GaN HEMT oscillator using a feedback multi-path transformer

    摘要: This article designs a low-phase noise 8.22 GHz GaN high electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) oscillator in the WIN 0.25 μm GaN HEMT process. The oscillator uses a HEMT amplifier with a transformer as the feedback network. The transformer uses a 3-path secondary inductor and a single-path primary inductor. The GaN oscillator consumes the power 4.328 mW and generates a signal at 8.22 GHz with an output power ?11.35 dBm. At 1 MHz frequency offset from the carrier at 8.22 GHz the phase noise is ?120.82 dBc/Hz, the figure of merit of the proposed oscillator is ?192.76 dBc/Hz. The oscillator chip occupies an area of 2 × 1 mm2.

    摘要: Due to the low power factor of an electrical system there is a high demand of reactive power from the transformers which results in overloading of the transformers. Traditionally, this problem is solved by adding a capacitor in parallel with the load in order to correct the power factor. In this paper a new innovative method which utilizes the solar plant at night when it is idling or during the day when it is not producing real power. During these times a solar plant is used as a source of reactive power, the inverters used in solar plants are capable of being used as a source of reactive power. The case study used to test this innovative method is a food processing plant with multiple transformers. The results show that it is possible to use a solar plant for power factor correction and hence relieve the transformers from overloading issues.

    摘要: Design of a circularly polarized microstrip patch antenna on an ultrathin PET substrate of 125 μm thickness is proposed for RFID applications. Screen-printed silver coating of 25 μm thickness serves as the antenna metallization. Improved feed-design and systematic optimization of the antenna overcomes the intrinsic constrains of designing microstrip antennas on extremely thin substrate. Optimally designed feed excites a nearly square patch antenna with truncated corners to achieve good impedance and radiation characteristics. The proposed antenna exhibiting 48 MHz impedance bandwidth (896 MHz to 944 MHz) and a 16 MHz AR bandwidth (907-923 MHz), can serve as a potential candidate as a low cost UHF reader antenna for RFID applications.

    摘要: This paper presents a universal power converter building block (PCBB) with isolation transformer which can perform various functionalities such as charging (G2V), vehicle to grid (V2G) regenerative capability, and vehicle to load (V2L) feature. This converter can output different types of voltage, such as AC or DC, high voltage or low voltage, single-phase or three-phase. With different combinations of modularized PCBB, various voltage and power rating can also be achieved. The control algorithms for each operation mode are explained, including G2V, V2G, and V2L. Simulation results are accompanied to validate its capability. To achieve high power density, SiC MOSFET power module with high frequency switching is adopted along with the isolation transformer of nanocrystalline core. Overall, this paper extends a promising circuit topology of multiple practical and essential features for vehicle electrification.

    摘要: A new scheme for a grid connected photovoltaic system capable of enhancing power quality of a distribution system is presented in this paper. The proposed system is consisted of a dual unified power quality conditioner (D-UPQC) based on open-end winding (OEW) transformer and series connected converters. The D-UPQC is consisted of four series converters connected to the grid via two three-phase transformer with open-end winding on the converters side. The proposed scheme uses two PV arrays, each array feeds a separate dc-link of a two three phase voltage source converter (VSC). The structure, control and capability of the proposed configuration are discussed in this paper. The effectiveness of the proposed configuration has been verified through simulation studies using Simulink/Matlab.

  • pH-sensitive fluorescent organic nanoparticles: Off-on fluorescent detection of furfural in transformer oil

    摘要: Furfural content is considered as index to estimate transformer remnant life. Therefore, low cost, highly sensitive methods for determination of furfural are highly desirable. In the present work, we describe a new strategy for furfural detection by tracing the 'off-on' fluorescence signals of fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONPs). Significant H+-dependent emission characteristics in aprotic organic solvent was found for our synthesized poly(DOPA)-FONPs. The fluorescence of poly(DOPA)-FONPs can be quickly quenched by hydroxylamine hydrochloride. Furfural can react with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to produce furan-2-carbaldehyde oxime and release proton in a 1:1 proportion. Then H+ produced by the reaction caused the fluorescence intensity at 520 nm to increase as a linear function of furfural concentrations. Under the optimum conditions, the linear working concentration range was found to be 0.01~30 mg L-1 and the LOD for the determination of furfural was 0.0015 mg L-1. The proposed method was used to determine furfural in transformer oil samples satisfactorily, providing a convenient alternative to conventional techniques.

    摘要: This report presents 3D printed flexible coreless transformers, which can be used in RF band for various applications such as voltage conversion and impedance matching for maximizing power transfer. Two types of transformers composed of a pair of coil inductors with opposing and complementary windings were printed on flexible polyimide film by using a 3D printer. Behaviors of printed transformers were simulated with parameters such as mutual inductance, coupling factor, power gain with 3D transformer models. And then, inductance value were compared with measured one.

  • High sensitivity fiber optic sensor for hydrogen detection in gas and transformer oil

    摘要: This paper reports on the characterisation of a palladium (Pd) based fiber optic hydrogen (H2) sensor for health monitoring of distribution and power transformers in the electrical grid. The sensor consists of a Pd foil, which expands due to H2 absorption, and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) that measures this expansion. Fifteen sensors were manufactured and characterised in gas and oil environments at various H2 concentrations and temperatures. In gas, the sensors were evaluated at 60°C, 75°C, 90°C, 105°C and 120°C and H2 concentrations from 0.01 to 5%. In oil, the same sensors were evaluated at 90°C and dissolved H2 concentrations from 5 to 2700 ppm. Furthermore, the influence of carbon monoxide (CO), which is often present in transformers and can impact H2 response of the sensor, was investigated. At 90°C in gas, the response to 0.01%, and 5% H2 was on average 28 pm, and 719 pm respectively. At 90°C in oil, the response to 5 ppm, and 2700 ppm dissolved H2 was on average 11 pm, and 763 pm respectively. The average, relative accuracy is better than 20% over the whole measurement range in gas and for measurements above 100 ppm in oil. These specifications make the sensor a promising candidate for online monitoring of H2 in transformers.

  • A new dual band 4 x 4 butler matrix with dual band 3dB quadrature branch line coupler and dual band 45° phase shifter

    摘要: A new dual band 4 × 4 butler matrix (BM) without crossover has been proposed, implemented and analyzed in this paper. A new dual band 45° phase shifter has also been proposed. The dual band BM, dual band 3dB quadrature branch line coupler (BLC) and dual band 45o phase shifter have been designed using Keysight Technologies’ Advanced Design System (ADS) software and implemented on the Rogers 2.33, having a thickness of 0.787 mm for 1.0 GHz and 2.5 GHz operating frequencies. Before the implementation of the proposed BM, the dual band 3dB quadrature BLC and dual band 45° phase shifter have been designed, implemented and analyzed. The proposed dual band 4 × 4 BM has been developed by placing four dual band 3dB quadrature BLCs and two dual band 45° phase shifters at their appropriate positions. Circuit parameters variation of the proposed BLC, phase shifter and BM with frequency ratios have been studied in this paper. The measured and simulated results of the dual band BM validated the design methodology. A performance analysis comparing the proposed BM with the existing butler matrices has also been carried out.

    摘要: In this paper, a technique of inductor coupling is used to optimize the bandwidth of the injection-locked transformer. This design replaces the inductance of a conventional injection-locked divider with a transformer consists by two coupled inductance, each has its own independent cross-coupled pair. This design is based on 40nm- CMOS technology, with a supply voltage of 0.9V, the post- simulation results achieve a locking range of 71.8-87.9GHz with an injected signal of 0dBm, and the core chip size is 88×130μm2.
