  • Direct oscillation at 640-nm in single longitudinal mode with a diode-pumped Pr:YLF solid-state laser

    摘要: A diode-pumped solid-state laser directly emitting continuous-wave (cw), single-longitudinal mode (SLM) output at 640-nm with a c-cut praseodymium-doped yttrium lithium fluoride (Pr:YLF) crystal was demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Combining two quarter-wave plates (QWPs) and one Brewster plate to form a twisted-mode cavity, this SLM solid-state laser achieved a maximum cw output power of 403 mW with a threshold of 600 mW and a slope efficiency of 26.8%. The emission spectrum had a linewidth of 150 MHz. The single-mode beam quality (M2) was 1.10 and 1.07 along the x and y direction, respectively.

  • Multi-wavelength oscillating and transverse mode switching in an all few-mode fiber laser based on polarization manipulation

    摘要: We have proved the polarization dependence of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG), and demonstrated an all few-mode fiber laser that can realize multi-wavelength oscillation and switchable transverse modes simultaneously based on the polarization dependence of FBG. In this fiber laser, single-, dual- and triple-wavelength oscillation can be realized by merely adjusting the polarization controller inside the cavity. Three output transverse modes including fundamental mode, second-order mode, and hybrid modes can be switched as the laser operates at three different single-wavelengths correspondingly. In addition, azimuthally and radially polarized beams can be easily generated. This all few-mode fiber laser scheme may play a more significant role in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems, mode division multiplexed (MDM) systems, sensing, and so on.

  • Tungsten disulfide saturable absorber for passively Q-Switched YVO4/Nd:YVO4/YVO4 laser at 1342.2 nm

    摘要: By using both tungsten disul?de saturable absorber (WS2-SA) and YVO4/Nd:YVO4(0.3 at.%)/YVO4 crystal, a passively Q-switched laser centered at 1342.2 nm is ?rst reported. Stable Q-switched pulses can be obtained. At the pump power of 12 W, a shortest pulse width of 550 ns and a pulse repetition rate of 97 kHz can be observed by a digital oscilloscope, corresponding to maximum pulse energy of 5.55 μJ and pulse peak power of 10.1 W. The results promote the promising applications of WS2-SA in all-solid-state laser at 1.3 μm.

  • On-line Writing of Fiber Bragg Grating Array on a Two-mode Optical Fiber for Sensing Applications

    摘要: On-line fabricated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array and its sensing potentials have attracted plenty of attention in recent years. In this paper, FBG arrays are written on-line on a two-mode fiber, and this two-mode fiber Bragg grating (TM-FBG) is further experimentally investigated for temperature and curvature sensing. The responses of this sensor were characterized by 11.2 pm/°C for temperature and ?0.21 dB/m?1 for curvature, respectively. Based on the measurements, a dual-parameter fiber sensing system was developed, which can realize the quasi-distributed, simultaneous detection of temperature and curvature, making it suitable for structural health monitoring or perimeter security.

  • Narrow linewidth DBR laser based on high order Bragg grating defined by i-line lithography

    摘要: In order to obtain narrow linewidth semiconductor laser around 1564 nm, we design a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser with high-order Bragg gratings (HOBGs) using butterfly encapsulation. The DBR laser is fabricated only by i-line lithography technology with grating period of 4.84 μm, groove width of 1.5 μm and grating length of 72 μm on a strip width of 4 μm. The 1mm-long devices achieved an output power of 9.9 mW and a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) more than 30 dB without facet coating at an injection current of 80 mA. The lasers showed ultra-narrow Lorentz linewidth of 70 KHz. This paper provides a simple method for large-scale production of narrow linewidth semiconductor lasers.

  • Narrow-line InGaN/GaN green laser diode with high-order distributed-feedback surface grating

    摘要: We demonstrate narrow-line green laser emission at 513.85 nm with a linewidth of 31 pm and side-mode suppression ratio of 36.9 dB, operating under continuous-wave injection at room temperature. A high-order (40th) distributed-feedback surface grating fabricated on multimode InGaN-based green laser diodes via a focused ion beam produces resolution-limited, single-mode lasing with an optical power of 14 mW, lasing threshold of 7.27 kA cm?2, and maximum slope efficiency of 0.32 W A?1. Our realization of narrow-line green laser diodes opens a pathway toward efficient optical communications, sensing, and atomic clocks.

  • Stable injection locking with slotted Fabry–Perot lasers at 2 <i>μ</i> m

    摘要: Injection locking has many applications in telecommunications systems, such as narrowing linewidths, increasing bandwidth and improving filtering. Beyond telecommunications, injection locking is widely used in remote sensing. This is of particular interest for applications in the 2 μm region, where gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane have identifiable absorption features. In this paper, we demonstrate stable injection locking with slotted Fabry–Perot lasers in the 2 μm wavelength region. Injection locking was observed in both the optical domain and power spectrum; with key features recorded such as injection ‘pulling’, side-mode suppression and the characteristic quiet region in the electrical domain denoting single-frequency emission and stable locking. The effect of varying the injection ratio was investigated, with a decreased injection ratio corresponding to a reduction in the locking bandwidth. Finally, the lasers were shown to remain injection locked, with no thermal drift, for over 24 h, indicating their suitability for implementation in a real-world telecommunications system.

  • Single-frequency fibre laser at 1030?nm based on gain bandwidth compression

    摘要: We demonstrate a single-frequency linear cavity fiber laser at 1030 nm with a distributed Bragg reflector cavity configuration. Despite the fact that the combination of the cavity length of the fiber laser and the reflection band of the output FBG cannot satisfy the condition of single-longitudinal mode oscillation, the single-frequency lasing is still realized by the proper temperature control of two FBGs to narrow the gain bandwidth. Under the respective temperature of two FBGs of 43.4 °C and 9 °C, the laser linewidth of around 9.6 kHz is achieved at a pump power of 113 mW. The relative noise intensity for frequencies of above 1.5 MHz is about ?140 dB Hz?1. The maximum output power of 126.2 mW is obtained with the slope efficiency of about 28%.

  • 100?GHz free spectral range-tunable multi-wavelength fiber laser using single–multi–single mode fiber interferometer

    摘要: Six single–multi–single (SMS) mode fiber-based Mach–Zehnder Interferometers (MZI) with different spooling radii are demonstrated as spatial mode filtering elements for multi-wavelength laser generation. Free spectral range (FSR) tuning of the multi-wavelength output generated is realized by alternating between the six MZIs, which have different macro-bending losses. Additional FSR tuning is also realized by changing the spooling radius of the two-mode step index fiber section within the MZI setups from 80 mm to 30 mm, giving an FSR tuning range of 0.89–0.99 nm. All generated multi-wavelength outputs show high stability over a test period of 100 min. The proposed multi-wavelength lasers are highly suitable for various microwave photonics applications the field of such as microwave signal source generation and microwave photonic filtering.
