To evaluate the inhibition of the REBa2Cu3O7-δ (REBCO, where RE is rare earth) film thickness effect and enhance the electric current carrying capacity of YGBCO films by introducing a Gd-CeO2 interlayer.

A Gd-CeO2 interlayer film with the desired thickness fabricated under an oxygen partial pressure of 20 mTorr and a laser energy of 200 mJ can effectively inhibit the thickness effect. After comprehensively considering the transmission capacity of the samples, including the Ic values and the degrees of damage in the transmission process, a low thickness, low oxygen partial pressure, moderate energy and high Gd content are recommended to deposit the Gd-CeO2 interlayer.

The samples’ superconductivity declined sharply at low laser energies due to the full oxidation of Gd particles deposited on the substrate. Additionally, YGBCO samples with a Gd-CeO2 interlayer were more likely to be damaged than a pure YGBCO sample in the measurement process.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A series of YGBCO/Gd-CeO2/YGBCO tri-layer films were prepared using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) under different experimental conditions to evaluate the inhibition of the thickness effect and enhance superconductivity.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
CeO2/IBAD-MgO/Y2O3/Al2O3/Hastelloy C276 substrates were used for the preparation of YGBCO films. The thickness of a single YGBCO layer was maintained at 100 nm by controlling the deposition time.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
A multi-target PLD system was used for film deposition. The crystallinity and crystallographic texture were measured using an X-ray diffraction system (XRD, D8 Discover with GADDS, Bruker Advanced X-ray Solution, Inc.). Surface morphologies and RMS roughness were measured with scanning electron microscopy (SEM, FEI Sirion 200) and atomic force microscopy (AFM, Tapping Mode, BioScope).
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The standard deposition cycle consisted of the bottom YGBCO layers, the Gd-CeO2 interlayers with different thicknesses, and the top YGBCO layers. The self-field Ic values of the tri-layer films were measured at 77 K using a conventional four-probe method.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The influence of the Gd-CeO2 interlayers on the superconducting performance was evaluated based on its crystallinity, texture, and surface morphology.
