研究目的
To demonstrate an economical and safer method for cladding etching of optical fibers using glass etching cream, as an alternative to hydrofluoric acid.
研究成果
The study successfully demonstrated a safe, economical, and controllable method for fabricating cladding-etched optical fibers using glass etching cream. The etching rates and surface roughness can be adjusted by changing the cream-water ratio, offering flexibility for different applications.
研究不足
The glass etching cream has a slower etching rate compared to hydrofluoric acid, which may not be suitable for applications requiring rapid etching. The surface roughness increases with the concentration of the solution, which may affect the quality for certain applications.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study investigates the use of glass etching cream mixed with De-Ionised water (DI water) for etching optical fibers. Four different etchant compositions were prepared and tested.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Optical fibers with cladding diameters of about 125 μm and 250 μm were used. The polymer coatings were removed, and the fibers were cleaned with Ethanol before etching.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Glass etching cream, DI water, Ethanol, plastic container, Keyence VHX-6000 digital microscope.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The fibers were etched in the prepared solutions for one to eight hours at room temperature. The setup was covered to minimize evaporation. After etching, the fibers were rinsed with DI water and cleaned with Ethanol.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The diameters of the etched fibers were measured, and the surface roughness was examined using a digital microscope.
