研究目的
Investigating the effects of selective laser melting (SLM) and traditional suction-casting on the fracture toughness and deformation mechanisms of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG).
研究成果
SLM processing significantly reduces the fracture toughness of the Zr-based BMG compared to traditional casting, attributed to higher oxygen content increasing the activation energy for shear transformations. Despite this, the toughness is comparable to many engineering alloys, suggesting SLM is viable for producing BMG components with sufficient damage tolerance.
研究不足
The study is limited to a specific Zr-based BMG and may not generalize to other BMGs. The micro-pillar compression results may not fully represent bulk behavior due to size effects.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study compared SLM-processed and suction-cast BMGs using single edge notched beam bending for fracture toughness and micro-pillar compression for deformation mechanisms.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Samples were fabricated from a commercial Zr-Cu-Nb-Al BMG powder for SLM and cast in water-cooled copper moulds for the as-cast condition.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Equipment included an EOS M290 for SLM, a Struers DuranScan hardness tester, a Bruker D8-TXS Discover for XRD, a PerkinElmer DSC8000 for DSC, and a Tescan Lyra dual-beam SEM for micro-pillar fabrication and compression.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Fracture toughness was measured via SEN(B) tests, microhardness via Vickers indentation, and structural analysis via XRD and DSC. Micro-pillar compression was performed in situ in an SEM.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Fracture toughness was analyzed according to ASTM standards E399 and E1820. Micro-pillar compression data was corrected for machine compliance and pillar sink-in.
