To review the fundamentals and fabrication of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) infiltrated with different materials and discuss their potential applications in sensing, identifying the challenges and limitations to scale up and commercialize this novel technology.

Despite some technological challenges, the field has grown exponentially, with potential applications in environmental and biochemical sensing, medical diagnostics, food safety, and security.
