  • Rapid Fabrication of Photoluminescent Electrospun Nanofibers without the Need of Chemical Polymeric Backbone Modifications

    摘要: Photoluminescent electrospun nano?bers were fabricated by incorporating a cyclopentadiene derivative AIE-active luminogen within the polymeric matrices of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), poly(vinylidene ?uoride)-co-hexa?uoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), and poly(methylacrylate) (PMMA) under di?erent solvents. Raman, infrared, and ?uorescence spectroscopy showed the molecular integrity of the AIEgen is maintained during the electrospinning process while exhibiting a strong and uniformed phosphorescent radiative pathway of τ average = 8.9 μs. This method allows for the rapid fabrication of photoluminescent nano?bers into a wide range of polymeric matrices without the need of chemical modi?cations. Taken together, the prepared electrospun phosphorescent nano?bers are a stepping stone for AIEgens to be applied in the digital manufacturing and design of smart textiles.

  • Self-assembly of clicked star-shaped triazines into functional nanostructures

    摘要: Two non-amphiphilic star-shaped 2,4,6-tris(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazines showing different behavior in terms of self-assembly and luminescent properties are described. They aggregate in the liquid phase to form low-dimensional nanostructures with a variety of morphologies, such as spherical particles, one-hole hollow spheres, toroids, twisted fibers or helical nanotubes, just by varying the conditions of a straightforward reprecipitation method. Aggregation has an opposite effect concerning the fluorescent properties of the proposed compounds, either causing the enhancement or the quenching of the emission after the self-assembly. Quantum chemical calculations have been also performed to assist in the structural and electronic characterization of the two star-shaped compounds.

  • Construction of a Luminogen Exhibiting High Contrast and Multicolored Emission Switching through Combination of a Bulky Conjugation Core and Toly Groups

    摘要: Stimuli responsive luminogens may find application in highly sensitive sensors, memories and security inks. However, few examples exhibiting both high contrast and multi-colored emission switching have been reported due to the absence of molecular design strategy. Through combination of large conjugation core and peripheral phenyl rings, we obtained ditolyldibenzofulvene (1). Luminogen 1 is AIE active and exhibits tetracolored emission depending on its morphology. Its three single crystals emit blue, yellow and dark orange light upon excitation, exhibiting a maximal emission of 461 nm, 545 nm and 586 nm, respectively, and its amorphous solid emits at 557 nm. All the four aggregates exhibit enhanced emission intensity at lower temperature, but only the orange emissive crystals exhibit blue-shifted emission. The emission of 1 can be switched reversibly between any two of the four states through morphology tuning. Finally, the potential application of 1 in optical data storage was also investigated.

  • AIE Fluorescent Gelators with Thermo-, Mechano- and Vapo-Chromic Properties

    摘要: A series of AIE fluorescent gelators TPE-Cn-Chol were synthesized by attaching tetraphenylethylene (TPE) to cholesterol through alkyl chain. The properties of their gels, nano/micro-aggregates and condensed phases were studied carefully. TPE-Cn-Chol molecules form AIE fluorescent gels in acetone and in DMF. Their fluorescence can be reversibly switched between “on” and “off” state by the gel-sol phase transitions upon thermal treatment. The AIE aggregated nano/microstructures in acetone/water mixtures with different water fractions were studied by fluorescence spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In different acetone/water mixtures TPE-Cn-Chol molecules form different nano/micro-aggregates, such as rod-like crystallites and spherical nanoparticles that show different fluorescence colours. Finally, the condensed phase behaviours of TPE-Cn-Chol were studied by polarizing microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), fluorescence spectrometry, fluorescence optical microscopy and wide-angle X ray scattering (WAXS). The clover-like TPE unit introduced into the rod-like cholesterol mesogen inhibits not only the formation of liquid crystal phase but also the recrystallization upon cooling from isotropic liquid phase. Very interestingly TPE-Cn-Chol molecules in the condensed state change their fluorescence colours upon external stimuli like melting, grinding and solvent fuming. The phase transition is the origin of these thermo-, mechano- and vapo-chromic properties. These findings offer a simple and interesting platform for the creation of multi-stimuli-responsive fluorescent sensors.

  • Synthesis of novel luminescent copper nanoclusters with substituent driven self-assembly and aggregation induced emission (AIE)

    摘要: We demonstrate a novel strategy to synthesize highly stable luminescent mercaptoimidazole-capped copper nanoclusters (CuNCs). Herein we depict that a simple modification of substituents on the mercaptoimidazole ligand dictates the self-assembly and photophysical properties of the clusters. These CuNCs showed aggregation induced emission (AIE) with a large Stokes shift (Dk 4 200 nm), and the formation of clusters corresponding to Cu4L3 was confirmed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometric analyses. Interestingly, these nanoclusters e?ectively internalize into mammalian cells while retaining their fluorescent properties and exhibit negligible toxicity.

  • Mechanoresponsive Material of AIE-Active 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole Luminophores Bearing Tetraphenylethylene Group with Rewritable Data Storage

    摘要: A new tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole derivative (APPTPECN) was synthesized with obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active by simple synthetic method. APPTPECN exhibited reversible mechano?uorochromic (MFC) behavior. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations exhibited that the MFC nature is originated through a conversion from the microcrystalline to amorphous phase under the stimulus of external force. The results obtained would be of major help in understanding the MFC mechanism and designing new MFC materials. Compound APPTPECN has the potential possibility to employ in rewritable data storage and is of assistance in the rational design of smart luminescent materials.

  • Far‐Red/Near‐Infrared Emissive (1,3‐Dimethyl)barbituric Acid‐Based AIEgens for High‐Contrast Detection of Metastatic Tumors in Lung

    摘要: Despite of the enthusiastic research in aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) in recent years, the ones that can be smoothly used for sophisticated biomedical applications such as in vivo bioimaging of pulmonary metastatic tumors during surgery are still limited. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new series of fluorescent AIEgens that consist of methoxy-substituted tetraphenylethene (TPE) as the electron-donating moiety, (1,3-dimethyl)barbituric acid as the electron-withdrawing moiety, and different π-bridge units. As compared to benzene or 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, using thiophene as the π-conjugation unit between the donor and acceptor results in relatively higher absolute fluorescence quantum yield (14.5%) in water when formulating the corresponding AIEgens into nanoparticles (AIE dots) with amphiphilic co-polymer as the doping matrix. The highly FR/NIR emissive thiophene-based AIE dots are demonstrated to be potent for intraoperative detection of pulmonary metastatic tumors particularly the micro-sized ones with excellent signal-to-background ratio.

  • Efficient synthesis of high solid content emulsions of AIE polymeric nanoparticles with tunable brightness and surface functionalization through miniemulsion polymerization

    摘要: Efficient production and flexible surface functionalization are important developing directions for the synthesis of polymeric nanomaterials. In this work, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) were efficiently synthesized by encapsulating a model AIE luminogen, tetraphenylethylene (TPE), within a polymeric matrix via miniemulsion polymerization. The AIE PNPs with similar emission and particle properties were synthesized in a wide solid content range of 8–40 wt%. The particle size and photoluminescence intensity of AIE PNPs could be flexibly tuned by synthetic parameters including the surfactant content and TPE content. Furthermore, the surface carboxyl- and amino-functionalization of AIE PNPs were conveniently achieved through copolymerization of styrene and functional monomers methacrylic acid and 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride, respectively, in miniemulsions. The surface functionalization extent could be facilely tuned by the content of functional monomers. This miniemulsion polymerization based technique could be a feasible and efficient method to prepare AIE PNPs with versatile surface functionalization, tunable brightness, and controllable particle properties for the applications in biodetection, bioimaging, etc.
