  • Room Temperature Graphene Mid-Infrared Bolometer with a Broad Operational Wavelength Range

    摘要: The last decade has witnessed the realization of numerous different types of graphene photodetectors with a strong focus on the visible and near-infrared spectral range, in which various high-performance photodetectors exist based on traditional materials such as silicon and III-V compound semiconductors. However, high-speed mid-infrared photodetection at room-temperature is still an unsolved challenge, despite its importance in applications such as security, sensing, and imaging. Here we address this challenge by demonstrating that high-quality graphene is an ideal high-speed bolometric material for the less-explored yet critical mid-infrared photodetection at room temperature, due to its broadband absorption, small heat capacity, and remarkably large temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of up to around 1% per Kelvin, which is comparable to that of commercial bolometric materials. We demonstrate a device based on graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) exhibiting decent extrinsic responsivities of 5.1-1.4 mA/W in 3.4-12 μm wavelength range at room temperature, and further predict a detection bandwidth of at least 47 MHz. Our demonstration lays the foundations for graphene high-speed mid-infrared technologies.

  • Commercially Fabricated Antenna-Coupled Transition Edge Sensor Bolometer Detectors for Next-Generation Cosmic Microwave Background Polarimetry Experiment

    摘要: We report on the development of commercially fabricated multi-chronic antenna-coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometer arrays for cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarimetry experiments. The orders of magnitude increase in detector count for next-generation CMB experiments require a new approach in detector wafer production to increase fabrication throughput. We describe collaborative efforts with a commercial superconductor electronics fabrication facility (SeeQC, Inc.) to fabricate antenna-coupled TES bolometer detectors. We have successfully fabricated an operational dual-polarization, dichroic sinuous antenna-coupled TES detector array on a 150-mm-diameter wafer. The fabricated detector arrays have average yield of 95% and excellent uniformity across the wafer. Both RF characteristics and TES bolometer properties are suitable for CMB observations. We successfully fabricated different types of TES bolometers optimized for frequency multiplexing readout, time-domain multiplexing readout, and microwave SQUID multiplexing readout. We also demonstrated high production throughput. We discuss the motivation, design considerations, fabrication processes, test results, and how industrial detector fabrication could be a path to fabricate hundreds of detector wafers for future CMB polarimetry experiments.

  • Particle Response of Antenna-Coupled TES Arrays: Results from SPIDER??and the Laboratory

    摘要: Future mm-wave and sub-mm space missions will employ large arrays of multi-plexed transition-edge-sensor (TES) bolometers. Such instruments must contend with the high flux of cosmic rays beyond our atmosphere that induce ‘glitches’ in bolometer data, which posed a challenge to data analysis from the Planck bolom-eters. Future instruments will face the additional challenges of shared substrate wafers and multiplexed readout wiring. In this work, we explore the susceptibility of modern TES arrays to the cosmic ray environment of space using two data sets: the 2015 long-duration balloon flight of the SPIDER?cosmic microwave background polarimeter, and a laboratory exposure of SPIDER? flight hardware to radioactive sources. We find manageable glitch rates and short glitch durations, leading to mini-mal effect on SPIDER? analysis. We constrain energy propagation within the sub-strate through a study of multi-detector coincidences and give a preliminary look at pulse shapes in laboratory data.

  • System level design of the ITER bolometer port plug cameras

    摘要: The ITER bolometer diagnostic is planned to have 550 lines of sight (LOS) distributed all over the vessel. 240 channels are provided by cameras mounted in two upper ports and in one equatorial port. This paper describes the current status of the system level design of the port cameras and the solutions proposed on how to implement all required camera components while meeting a multitude of competing requirements. Sensor holders, support structures, and different apertures depending on the camera type (pinhole or collimator), cable connectors, ceramic track plates, and many mineral insulated cables have to be integrated within a restricted space envelope to guarantee functionality. The design of the internal electrical interfaces and the external mechanical mountings will be described as well. Using the example of an upper port camera with 60 LOS, the assembly of the camera components is explained and two currently discussed architecture options for the remote handling maintenance scheme in the hot cell are compared.

  • 2D Material-enabled Nanomechanical Bolometer

    摘要: We here describe a novel type of long-wavelength radiation detector that measures illumination intensity at room temperature through mechanical transduction. Compared to semiconductor-based bolometers, our nanomechanical detector exhibits low measurement noise and is inherently transparent and flexible. The presented solid-state device is based on a 2D-material film that acts as radiation absorber and detector of mechanical strain at the substrate-absorber interface. Optimization of the 2D material properties and realization of a novel edge-on device geometry combines unprecedented detectivity of 3.34 × 108 cm Hz1/2 W-1 with micrometer-scale spatial resolution. The observed combination of superior performance with the facile and scalable fabrication using only liquid processes shows the potential of the presented detector for future ubiquitous and wearable electronics.

  • 100 GHz Multiple Colliding Pulse Generation From Cleaved Facet-Free Multi-Section Semiconductor Laser Diode

    摘要: Terahertz (THz) cameras comprising an uncooled micro-bolometer array have been developed for simple THz imaging, and the improvement of their sensitivity is one of the important issues. We fabricated a new micro-bolometer array with a resonant cavity structure for a real-time THz camera, alongside a new method for evaluating the sensitivity across a wide range of the THz frequency region. The frequency dependence of the sensitivity of the THz camera is measured in the 0.5–2.0-THz frequency range taking the polarization dependence into account. It was found that the resonant cavity structure effectively increased the sensitivity of the THz camera, and, actually, the improvement by one order of magnitude was achieved in the frequency range below 1 THz. The THz camera with much enhanced sensitivity will expand the frontiers of real-time THz imaging such as molecular imaging and nondestructive inspection.

  • Design, Simulation and Fabrication of Highly Sensitive Cooled Silicon Bolometers for Millimeter-Wave Detection

    摘要: This paper reports our results on the electrothermal modeling of cryogenic silicon bolometers with pixel pitches of 500 and 1200 μm designed for cosmic microwave background polarimetric observation in 0.6 mm and 1.5 mm bands. These detectors should provide a high responsivity, typically around 1011 V/W, and a very low noise equivalent power (NEP) of 10?18 W/Hz1/2 between 50 and 100 mK. They are based on doped silicon thermometers, which exhibit a nonohmic behavior described by the “hot electron model” (HEM) at very low temperature under high bias currents. We compare this model to the experimental characterization of these thermometers at cryogenic temperatures to confirm that the HEM is governing their electrical characteristics and their sensitivity at very low temperature. Finally, this model is used to derive the simulated responsivity and NEP performances of the pixels under weak and moderate optical power illumination.

    摘要: We present a detailed investigation of the responsivity and the noise in room temperature THz direct detectors made of YBa Cu O (YBCO) thin-film nano-bolometers. The YBCO nano-bolometers are integrated with planar spiral antennas covering a frequency range from 100 GHz to 2 THz. The detectors were characterized at 1.6 THz, 0.7 THz, 400 GHz and 100 GHz. The maximum electrical responsivity of 70 V/W and a minimum noise equivalent power (NEP) of 50 pW/Hz were measured, whereas the highest optical responsivity was 45 V/W. The noise in nano-bolometers is independent on the device volume and for a given modulation frequency and a dc voltage Hz.

The bolometer achieves a sensitivity of 0.80 % change in resistance per milliwatt of input power at the 3.8 μm wavelength.
