  • 20?W 1952?nm tandem hybrid single and double clad TDFA

    摘要: A simple engineering design is important for achieving high Thulium-doped ampli?er (TDFA) performance such as good power conversion, low noise ?gure (NF), scalable output power, high gain, and stable operation over a large dynamic range. In this paper we report the design, performance, and simulation of two stage high-power 1952 nm hybrid single and double clad TDFAs. The ?rst stage of our hybrid ampli?er is a single clad design, and the second stage is a double clad design. We demonstrate TDFAs with an output power greater than 20 W with single-frequency narrow linewidth (i.e. MHz) input signals at both 1952 and 2004 nm. An optical 10 dB bandwidth of 80 nm is derived from the ASE spectrum. The power stage is constructed with 10 μm core active ?bers showing a maximum optical slope e?ciency greater than 50%. The experimental results lead to a 1 dB agreement with our simulation tool developed for single clad and double clad TDFAs. Overall this hybrid ampli?er o?ers versatile features with the potential of much higher output power.

  • Cross correlation peak-seeking technique of BOTDR based on the incomplete Brillouin spectrum

    摘要: Considered the limitation of sweeping frequency technique, Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) can only perceive slow external interference. It greatly limits the scope of application. For perceiving rapid external interference, a method of cross correlation peak-seeking technique based on incomplete Brillouin spectrum (IBS) is proposed, and the feasibility of the method is verified under the background of the monitoring of sound barriers along the high-speed railway. The numerical simulation results indicate that the probability that obtains an accurate peak frequency error within the 0.50 MHz can reach 49/50, when frequency interval for sweeping is 5 MHz and number of splicing IBS is 80. In addition, to select the optimal parameters of the system, we also take a further analysis on the effect of the splicing times and the frequency interval for sweeping on the peak detection accuracy. This method is significant to extend the application of BOTDR from slow changing fields to rapid changing fields.

  • Dynamic quasi-distributed ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating array sensing enabled by depth-resolved dual-comb spectroscopy

    摘要: Distributed sensing plays an important role in many industrial applications. Sensor arrays consisting of identical ultra-weak fiber Bragg gratings can be applied to such scenarios by monitoring the optical spectral response of the sensors. Yet, the spatial resolution, the sampling speed and the supported number of sensors in the array are mostly determined by the interrogation scheme. While dual optical frequency comb techniques had been successfully demonstrated as a high-resolution spectroscopic technique in metrology, it had been beyond the reach of industrial sensing applications because of its high complexity and costs. It is proposed and demonstrated here that, enabled by a simple fiber-optic, dual-comb spectroscopy setup consisting of a fiber laser without frequency stabilization, interrogation of an ultra-weak fiber sensor array can be realized. High spatial and spectral resolution as well as kHz interrogation speed is achieved in both static and dynamic measurements. It is expected that our depth-resolved dual-comb scheme can measure hundreds of sensors response in less than 1 ms. It is also flexible to deal with targets closely spaced or farther apart from each other. This shows the potential of applying dual-comb spectroscopy to more and more industrial application areas.

  • Fabrication of a fiber probe using a CO2 laser for microstructure measurement: High functionality and durability test

    摘要: In recent years, the importance of measuring microstructures of mechanical microparts, micro holes, etc. has increased due to advances in microfabrication technology. Specifically, several microstructure measurement methods have been proposed with the objective of improving the functionality of devices. Therefore, we aim to develop a highly accurate measurement system with a low measurement force using a micro optical fiber probe. In this research, we conducted performance test of water repellent coating on a stylus tip to prevent adhesion to the measured surface by surface forces, in addition to durability tests.
