Editorial: Special Issue a??Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Nano- and Microstructures for Tribological Applicationsa??
摘要: Laser material processing is an innovative technology that generates surface functionalities on the basis of optical, mechanical, or chemical properties. In the form of laser surface texturing (LST), it has attracted a remarkable amount of research to tailor surface properties towards various tribological applications. Of this single-step, laser-based technology, the main advantages are the contactless machining, featuring a high flexibility, efficiency, and speed, along with the excellent quality of the processed products. LST can be applied precisely, localized to sub-micrometric areas, but, via laser beam scanning, it is also feasible for structuring large surface areas the size of square-meters.

Effect of liquid environment on single-pulse generation of laser induced periodic surface structures and nanoparticles
摘要: The effect of a liquid environment on the fundamental mechanisms of surface nanostructuring and generation of nanoparticles by single pulse laser ablation is investigated in a closely integrated computational and experimental study. A large-scale molecular dynamics simulation of spatially-modulated ablation of Cr in water reveals a complex picture of dynamic interaction between the ablation plume and water, which involves rapid deceleration of the ablation plume by water environment, formation and prompt disintegration of a hot metal layer at the interface between the ablation plume and water, lateral redistribution and redeposition of a major fraction of the ablation plume, and eventual formation of smooth frozen surface features. A good agreement between the shapes of the surface features predicted in the simulation and the ones generated in single pulse laser ablation experiments performed for Cr in water supports the mechanistic insights revealed in the simulations. The results of this study suggest that the presence of liquid environment can eliminate the sharp features of surface morphology, reduce the amount of material removed from the target by more than an order of magnitude, and narrow down the nanoparticle size distribution as compared to laser ablation in vacuum. Moreover, the computational predictions of the effective incorporation of molecules constituting the liquid environment into the surface region of the irradiated target and the generation of high vacancy concentrations exceeding the equilibrium levels by more than an order of magnitude suggest a potential for hyperdoping of laser-generated surfaces by solutes present in the liquid environment.

Laser Micro-Texturing of Sintered Tool Materials Surface
摘要: The purpose of this paper is to show the effect of tool materials surface treatment while using laser texturing on the structure and properties of cemented carbides and sialon ceramics. The tests were made on multi-point inserts subjected laser texturization and honeycomb-like texture was obtained. Comprehensive investigations in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) were made. Morphology was examined by the use of atomic forces microscope (AFM) and confocal microscope. The chemical composition of the tested materials using energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) was investigated. Moreover, exploitative properties, including wear resistance using the "pin on disc" method and roughness, were also tested. It was found that the laser texturing provides a suitable modification of the structure improving tribological properties. Tests suggest that laser texturing can contribute to the durability of cutting tool’s edge, which qualifies this type of surface treatment for wide industrial applications.

Fabrication of grooves on polymer-derived SiAlCN ceramics using femtosecond laser pulses
摘要: In this study, grooves were fabricated on the surface of fully dense polymer-derived SiAlCN ceramics. Industrial femtosecond laser source was used at wavelength of 1030 nm with pulse duration of 290 fs and repetition rate of 100 kHz. Moreover, comprehensive study was carried out to evaluate the influence of scan speed and energy fluence on grooves quality, including the heat-affected zone around the laser-machined grooves, microstructures of laser-irradiated surface, and cross-section morphology of grooves. A series of grooves with width in the range of 30–80 μm and depth below 280 μm was successfully fabricated using femtosecond laser pulse. Laser parameters were optimized to obtain grooves with satisfying surface quality. Furthermore, formation and disappearance of laser-induced periodic surface structures were systematically investigated. This study proposes fabrication of grooves on SiAlCN ceramics via laser processing, which provides precise method for fabrication of microstructure with fascinating properties.

On the Role of a ZDDP in the Tribological Performance of Femtosecond Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures on Titanium Alloy against Different Counterbody Materials
摘要: Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS, ripples) with ~500–700 nm period were produced on titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surfaces upon scan processing in air by a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. The tribological performance of the surfaces were quali?ed in linear reciprocating sliding tribological tests against balls made of di?erent materials using di?erent oil-based lubricants. The corresponding wear tracks were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy and confocal pro?lometry. Extending our previous work, we studied the admixture of the additive 2-ethylhexyl-zinc-dithiophosphate to a base oil containing only anti-oxidants and temperature stabilizers. The presence of this additive along with the variation of the chemical composition of the counterbodies allows us to explore the synergy of the additive with the laser-oxidized nanostructures.

Tribological performance of metal-reinforced ceramic composites selectively structured with femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures
摘要: The impact of femtosecond (fs) laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on tribological properties was investigated for metal-reinforced ceramic composites (Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb). For this purpose, the metallic niobium (Nb) phase was selectively structured with LIPSS in an air environment with different values of the fs-laser peak fluence by near-infrared fs-laser radiation (λ = 1,025 nm, τ = 300 fs, frep = 1 kHz), taking advantage of the different light absorption behavior of ceramic and metal. The tribological performance was evaluated by reciprocating sliding tests in a ball-on-disc configuration using Ringer’s solution as lubricant. The surfaces were characterized before and after laser irradiation by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and by measuring the contact angle with Ringer’s solution. The LIPSS formation resulted in an increased wetting of the surface with the lubricant. Moreover, the selectively structured composite surfaces revealed a coefficient of friction significantly reduced by a factor of ~ 3 when compared to the non-irradiated surface. Furthermore, the formation of a laser-induced oxidation layer was detected with NbO as the most prominent oxidation state. Selectively structured composites with outstanding mechanical properties and enhanced tribological performance are of particular interest for biomedical applications.

Effects of laser processing conditions on wettability and proliferation of Saos-2 cells on CoCrMo alloy surfaces
摘要: Any processing disturbances in laser surface texturing (LST) could compromise the resulting surface topography and their desired functional response. Disturbances such as focal plane offsets and beam incident angle variations are always present in LST processing of 3D parts and can affect the surface morphology. In this research the effects of these laser processing disturbances in producing laser induced surface structures (LIPSS) on CoCrMo alloy substrates were investigated. In particular, these two disturbances were considered as laser processing variables to determine their effects on functional responses of LIPSS treated surfaces, i.e. surface wettability and the proliferation of Saos-2 osteoblast-like cells were evaluated. It was found that the changes of laser processing conditions led to a decrease in surface wettability and Saos-2 cells proliferation. In addition, a correlation between surface wettability and cell proliferation on LIPSS treated surface was identified and conclusions made about the effects of investigated process disturbances on the functional response of LIPSS treated CoCrMo substrates.

Influence of Femtosecond Laser Surface Nanotexturing on the Friction Behavior of Silicon Sliding Against PTFE
摘要: The aim of the present work was to investigate the influence of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) produced by femtosecond laser on the friction behavior of silicon sliding on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in unlubricated conditions. Tribological tests were performed on polished and textured samples in air using a ball-on-flat nanotribometer, in order to evaluate the friction coefficient of polished and textured silicon samples, parallel and perpendicularly to the LIPSS orientation. In the polished specimens, the friction coefficient decreases with testing time at 5 mN, while it increases slightly at 25 mN. It also decreases with increasing applied load. For the textured specimens, the friction coefficient tends to decrease with testing time in both sliding directions studied. In the parallel sliding direction, the friction coefficient decreases with increasing load, attaining values similar to those measured for the polished specimen, while it is independent of the applied load in the perpendicular sliding direction, exhibiting values lower than in the two other cases. These results can be explained by variations in the main contributions to friction and in the wear mechanisms. The influence of the temperature increase at the interface and the consequent changes in the crystalline phases of PTFE are also considered.

Monitoring of Evolving Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures
摘要: Laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are generated on titanium and silicon nitride surfaces by multiple femtosecond laser pulses. An optical imaging system is used to observe the backscattered light during the patterning process. A characteristic fringe pattern in the backscattered light is observed and evidences the surface modification. Experiments are complemented by finite difference time domain numerical simulations which clearly show that the periodic surface modulation leads to characteristic modulations in the coherently scattered light field. It is proposed that these characteristic fringe pattern can be used as a very fast and low-cost monitor of LIPSS formation formation during the manufacturing process.

Picosecond Laser Interference Patterning of Periodical Micro-Architectures on Metallic Molds for Hot Embossing
摘要: In this work, it is demonstrated that direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) is a method capable of producing microtextured metallic molds for hot embossing processes. Three different metals (Cr, Ni, and Cu), relevant for the mold production used in nanoimprinting systems, are patterned by DLIP using a picosecond laser source emitting at a 532 nm wavelength. The results show that the quality and surface topography of the produced hole-like micropatterns are determined by the laser processing parameters, such as irradiated energy density and the number of pulses. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are also observed on the treated surfaces, whose shapes, periodicities, and orientations are strongly dependent on the accumulated fluence. Finally, the three structured metals are used as embossing molds to imprint microlenses on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) foils using an electrohydraulic press. Topographical profiles demonstrate that the obtained structures are comparable to the masters showing a satisfactory reproduction of the texture. The polymeric microlens arrays that showed the best surface homogeneity and overall quality were those embossed with the Cr molds.
