  • Dual-wavelength thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser generation in 2 <i>μ</i> m region with high side-mode suppression ratio

    摘要: We demonstrate a dual-wavelength laser with emission in the 2 μm wavelength region using a thulium/holmium co-doped fiber and a non-adiabatic tapered fiber as a comb filter. The configuration employed a backward pumping scheme and dual-wavelength laser was generated at 2023.53 and 2032.82 nm. The side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is more than 44 dB with overall good stability performance. The proposed configuration presents a simple yet practical scheme of generating 2 μm dual-wavelength laser with good SMSR. This investigation may offer a more efficient yet eye safe dual-wavelength related applications for end users.

  • Compression of femtosecond pulses in a wide wavelength range using a large-mode-area tapered fiber

    摘要: We report the design of a tapered fiber that can be used for the compression of pulses at different central wavelengths. The proposed fiber is a three-layer W-type large-mode-area fiber, which has been tapered to transform the mode area from 1700 μm2 to 900 μm2. We determine the exact length of the maximum pulse compression and numerically demonstrate the compression of a 250 fs, 100 kW peak power input pulse to 15 fs, 850 kW at 1.55 μm wavelength and compression of 250 fs, 120 kW peak power input pulses to 28 fs, 700 kW and to 46 fs, 500 kW at 1.8 μm and 2 μm wavelengths, respectively. Such a fiber can find wide ranging applications, including in communication, spectroscopy and medicine.

  • Investigation of a low cost tapered plastic fiber optic biosensor based on manipulation of colloidal gold nanoparticles

    摘要: We demonstrate a low cost Tapered Fiber Optic Biosensor (TFOBS) based on manipulation of colloidal gold nanoparticle in the evanescent field of tapered fiber. The sensor consists of a biconical tapered plastic optical fiber with colloidal gold nanoparticles coated on the tapered region. The strength of evanescent field absorption as a function of gold nanoparticle size is evaluated using Finite Difference Time Domain simulation. Simulation results suggest that in order to achieve maximum absorption in visible range of wavelength, the size of the gold nanoparticle should be in the range 3-4 nm. Gold nanoparticle of desired size is then synthesized and coated on the tapered region to fabricate a TFOBS. It is found experimentally that coating of gold nanoparticles enhances the fraction of light coming out to the cladding surface. This is explained as a consequence of local surface plasmonic resonance. The TFOBS is then tested for its sensing application to detect Bovine Serum Albumin. Level of detection of the proposed sensor is calculated and is found as 0.326gm/dL.As normal albumin level in healthy human blood serum is between 3.5 to 5.5gm/dL, the proposed TFOBS can be used as a low cost accurate albumin sensor.

    摘要: Nanolayers of MoSe2, NiO, VO2, Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 compounds were fabricated using MOCVD technology. They were grown directly or mechanically deposited as a mixture with the polymer on the surface of tapered section of fibers. Tapers were fabricated by chemical etching. The deposition process was carried out in a special tubular quartz reactor with in-situ monitoring of optical transmission in the range of wavelength 1–1.65 μm. According to AFM, the deposited films consist of islands and occupy an insignificant part of the fiber surface. Tapers coated by 2D nanoislands were embedded in the ring circuit of an erbium fiber laser and tested as passive Q-switch. A transition from the continuous CW mode to the Q-switch mode was achieved for several samples with a taper diameter of less than 11 μm. For tapers of larger diameter the transition to the Q-switch mode was observed only when nanoislands of 2D compound were coated by polymer.

  • Label-free Thrombin Detection Using a Tapered Fiber-optic Interferometric Aptasensor

    摘要: Aptamer biosensor for label-free thrombin detection based on a tapered fiber-optic interferometer has been proposed and demonstrated. The biosensor probe can be easily fabricated by tapering a commercial double-cladding fiber down to 5 μm in diameter and it provides a high refractive index sensitivity of 1660 nm/RIU. The changes are determined by tracing the wavelength shift of the dip in the transmission spectrum with variable surrounding refractive index. With the help of surface functionalization of thrombin-binding aptamers, the proposed fiber-optic biosensor proves its capability in label-free detection of thrombin with a lowest detectable concentration of 0.1 μM, together with high specificity in various concentrations of pure and mixed thrombin solutions.

  • Highly coherent 1.5-8.3μm broadband supercontinuum generation in tapered As-S chalcogenide fibers

    摘要: We reported a highly coherent broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation in As-S chalcogenide tapered fibers pumped at 3.75 μm. The fiber preforms based on As-S glasses with a core/cladding diameter ratio of 1:25 were fabricated via isolated stacked extrusion. The waist diameters of tapered fibers can be changed by controlling the parameter of homemade tapering platform to realize all-normal dispersion (ANDi) characteristic. A broadband SC generation spanning from 1.5 to 8.3 μm was obtained in a 15-cm-long tapered fiber with waist core diameter of 4.8 μm. And high coherence property of the generated SC spectrum was investigated and verified by the simulation. The effect of different waist core diameters on SC spectra coherence properties was also investigated by numerical simulation.

    摘要: the use of etching in the fabrication of nanofiber optic (NFO) can enable the creation of thinner, longer, bundled, and strong wires. The aim of this etching methodology is to control the reduction of the core diameter and to demonstrate two different reducing methods applied to fabricate NFO. A large penetration depth of an evanescent field (EF) is the explanation of achievement for increasing a fiber-optic evanescent-field sensor (FOEFS). In general, the penetration depth (dp) of an optical fiber, stripped of its cladding, was a relation to the wavelength of the incident light, the refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium and the incident angle on the basis of the ray-tracing model. Ray tracing analysis of tapered nano fiber optics segments and of combination taper probes make evident that the increases along the length of the taper, creating a segmented sensor with increased excitation light available at the surface for stimulating of ray transmitting. In this work, to study an NFO based on a tapered sensing probe by using the numerical analysis. The light power transmission and ultimate sensitivity of the element sensor are influenced by the incident angle, the numerical aperture (NA), core diameter, and taper ratio (TR). The TR of 0.1 and 0.7 are yield higher dp in certain regions. Then, the optimal result and the maximum dp were obtained with dp =1140 nm in TR=0.1 and a tapering length (L) of position tapering Z=40 mm.

  • INVESTIGATING THE EFFECT OF TAPER LENGTH ON SENSITIVITY OF THE TAPERED-FIBER BASED TEMPERATURE SENSOR

    摘要: A temperature sensor using single-mode tapered fiber is presented. To better understand the behaviour of a tapered optical fiber, transmission experiments with different taper profiles, specifically waist length were performed. The effects of taper profiles on the sensitivity of the sensor were also investigated. It is demonstrated that careful selection of the taper profile can increase the sensitivity of the sensor. In our experiment, a good temperature sensing result was achieved using the optimum parameter. The best sensitivity achieved was 45.5 pm/°C that measured the range of temperature from 30°C to 120°C. The fabricated sensors are easy to fabricate and relatively low cost. Our results indicate that the tapered fiber based temperature sensor has high sensitivity and good repeatability.

  • Lard detection using a tapered optical fiber sensor integrated with gold-graphene quantum dots

    摘要: In this paper, we reported the detection of lard using tapered optical fiber integrated with graphene quantum dot (GQD). Two different sensors were fabricated and tested, one coated with GQD only as sensing element, the other was coated with gold (Au)-GQD to be tested with lard concentration ranging from 20% till 100%. The GQD coated sensor obtained a sensitivity of 0.034/a.u.% at fluorescence emission peak 652 nm. Meanwhile the Au-GQD sensor, obtained higher sensitivity at 0.042/a.u.% with peak fluorescence emission at 680 nm. The proposed sensor shows a great potential of using sensor in detection of lard for future advancement of food technology.
