  • Tailoring the photovoltaic effect in (1a??1a??1) oriented BiFeO <sub/>3</sub> /LaFeO <sub/>3</sub> superlattices

    摘要: Ferroelectric and photovoltaic properties of (BiFeO3)(1?x)Λ/(LaFeO3)xΛ superlattices grown by pulsed laser deposition have been investigated (Λ being the bilayer thickness). For a high concentration of BiFeO3 a ferroelectric state is observed simultaneously with a switchable photovoltaic response. In contrast for certain concentration of LaFeO3 a non-switchable photovoltaic effect is evidenced. Such modulation of the PV response in the superlattices is attributed to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition which is controlled with the increase of x. Remarkably, concomitant to this change of PV mechanism, a change of the conduction mechanism also seems to take place from a bulk-limited to an interface-limited transport as x increases.

  • Oxygen in Complex Oxide Thin Films Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition: a Perspective

    摘要: For thin film synthesis of complex oxides, one of the most important issues has always been how to oxidise the material. For a technique like pulsed laser deposition, a key benefit is the relatively high oxygen background pressure one can operate at, and therefor oxidation should be relatively straightforward. However, understanding the microscopic oxidation mechanisms turns out to be rather difficult. In this perspective, we give a brief overview of the sources of oxidation for complex oxide thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. While it is clear what these sources are, their role in the kinetics of the formation of the crystal structure and oxygen stoichiometry is not fully understood.

  • Morphological design of complex oxides during pulsed-laser deposition: The role of plasma-plume expansion

    摘要: Complex oxides such as tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) are widely utilized as transparent conductors in a variety of functional devices. Typically, they are fabricated by sputtering, which often requires additional annealing to achieve high transparency and conductivity. Using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), both high transparency and high conductivity have been achieved without annealing, using instead selected gas species and pressures. However, the relative roles of Stranski-Krastanov-like and vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth modes during morphological transitions remain controversial. Here, we report on PLD of ITO in an inert-gas environment, identifying the role of plasma-plume expansion in the selection of VLS vs vapor-solid (VS) growth. For the lowest N2 pressure, indium-tin droplet formation, followed by self-catalyzed VLS growth, is observed. With increasing N2 pressure, a transition from VLS to VS growth is apparent. It is hypothesized that oxygen scattering at the lowest N2 pressure induces a metal-rich plume, which leads to metal droplet formation, followed by VLS growth. As the N2 pressure is increased, the plasma-plume and its metal-rich core are compressed, resulting in a transition to VS growth. This tunable compression of the plasma-plume o?ers a route to the morphological design of a wide range of functional complex oxide devices with tunable optical and electronic performance.

  • Review of photoresponsive properties at SrTiO <sub/>3</sub> -based heterointerfaces

    摘要: The two-dimensional electron gas at SrTiO3-based heterointerfaces has received a great deal of attention in recent years owing to their potential for the exploration of emergent physics and the next generation of electronics. One of the most fascinating aspects in this system is that the light, as a powerful external perturbation, can modify its transport properties. Recent studies have reported that SrTiO3-based heterointerfaces exhibit the persistent photoconductivity and can be tuned by the surface and interface engineering. These researches not only reveal the intrinsic physical mechanisms in the photoresponsive process, but also highlight the ability to be used as a tool for novel all-oxide optical devices. This review mainly contraposes the studies of photoresponse at SrTiO3-based heterointerfaces.
