  • Metamaterial Antenna on Electro-Optic Modulator for Wireless Terra-Hertz Detection Through Radio-Over-Fibre Technology

    摘要: We propose a new metamaterial antenna on electro-optic (EO) modulator for wireless terra-hertz detection through radio-over-fibre (ROF) technology. By wireless terra-hertz signal irradiation to the proposed device, strong terra-hertz electric field can be induced on the electric-LC metamaterial resonator. The induced terra-hertz electric field can be used for optical modulation through EO effects when a light-wave propagates into an optical waveguide located under the capacitive gap which the strongest induced terra-hertz electric field. Analysis of optical modulation is presented in details for operational frequency of 0.1 THz. The device fabrication process and the results of its measured characteristics are also reported.

  • Pulse shaping by a frequency filtering of a sawtooth phase-modulated cw laser

    摘要: The spectrum of a cw field the phase of which experiences a periodic sawtooth modulation is analyzed. Two types of the sawtooth phase modulation are considered. One is created by combining many harmonics of the fundamental frequency. The second is produced by an electro-optic modulator fed by the relaxation oscillator, which generates a voltage slowly rising during charging of the energy storage device and dropping fast due to discharge by a short circuit. It is proposed to filter out the main spectral component of the sawtooth phase-modulated field. This filtering produces short pulses from the phase-modulated cw field. The duty cycle of this train is equal to the modulation period, while duration of the pulses depends on the rate of the phase drop. In the case of harmonics, this duration is 4N + 2 shorter than the period of the fundamental frequency, where N is the number of the harmonics. In the case of the charge and discharge, duration of the pulses is close to TD/2, where TD is a drop time of the phase in the discharge period. Depending on the modulation frequency, the proposed method is capable to produce pulses with duration ranging from nanoseconds to a fraction of a picosecond.

  • Design and Optimization of Proton Exchanged Integrated Electro-Optic Modulators in X-Cut Lithium Niobate Thin Film

    摘要: In this study, we designed, simulated, and optimized proton exchanged integrated Mach-Zehnder modulators in a 0.5-μm-thick x-cut lithium niobate thin film. The single-mode conditions, the mode distributions, and the optical power distribution of the lithium niobate channel waveguides are discussed and compared in this study. The design parameters of the Y-branch and the separation distances between the electrodes were optimized. The relationship between the half-wave voltage length production of the electro-optic modulators and the thickness of the proton exchanged region was studied.

  • Electro-optic entanglement source for microwave to telecom quantum state transfer

    摘要: We propose an efficient microwave-photonic modulator as a resource for stationary entangled microwave-optical fields and develop the theory for deterministic entanglement generation and quantum state transfer in multi-resonant electro-optic systems. The device is based on a single crystal whispering gallery mode resonator integrated into a 3D-microwave cavity. The specific design relies on a new combination of thin-film technology and conventional machining that is optimized for the lowest dissipation rates in the microwave, optical, and mechanical domains. We extract important device properties from finite-element simulations and predict continuous variable entanglement generation rates on the order of a Mebit/s for optical pump powers of only a few tens of microwatts. We compare the quantum state transfer fidelities of coherent, squeezed, and non-Gaussian cat states for both teleportation and direct conversion protocols under realistic conditions. Combining the unique capabilities of circuit quantum electrodynamics with the resilience of fiber optic communication could facilitate long-distance solid-state qubit networks, new methods for quantum signal synthesis, quantum key distribution, and quantum enhanced detection, as well as more power-efficient classical sensing and modulation.

  • [Springer Theses] CMOS-Compatible Key Engineering Devices for High-Speed Silicon-Based Optical Interconnections || Summary and Future Work

    摘要: This dissertation mainly focuses on four important scientific problems in silicon photonics, i.e., silicon electro-optic modulator, advanced multiplexing mechanism, polarization controlling and fiber-to-chip coupling. It systematically puts forward the design theory of silicon electro-optic modulator, investigates advanced multiplexing mechanisms, studies polarization-controlling devices, and explores fiber-to-chip coupling techniques. The research demonstrates high-performance devices fabricated with commercial 130 nm CMOS process, including a high-speed carrier-depletion silicon electro-optic modulator, WDM devices, PDM devices, MDM devices, and ultra-compact polarization splitter-rotators. The work aims to contribute to the field of silicon photonics by providing CMOS-compatible solutions for high-speed silicon-based optical interconnections.

    摘要: We demonstrate that the capacitance of OE/EO conversion devices, such as photo-detectors and electro-optic modulators, can be reduced down to a fF level by use of photonic crystals. This enables us to drastically reduce the energy efficiency of OE/EO conversion. We show that on-chip high-speed photo-receivers can be operated without any electrical power, and pseudo-all-optical-nonlinear devices can be realized by a combination of a fF photodetector and a fF electro-optic modulator. Integrated nanophotonics technologies, including those fF-optoelectronic devices, will enable optical pass-gate logic circuits for low-latency optical computation. We present our novel designs for various examples including optical full adder circuits. In addition, we show linear optic gates for logic functions which enable extremely small latency.
