    摘要: Deformable inputs offer users the ability to physically manipulate a device for system interaction. We combine flexible electronic technologies with human computer interaction to study how changing the form factor of digital devices can offer new interaction techniques to users. We introduce our research on deformable user interfaces by discussing bend gestures as a source of input, presenting our process to rapidly prototype flexible devices, and demonstrate three deformable user interfaces: bend passwords, bend for mobile games, and bend for vision impaired users. We show how flexible devices and deformable interactions can improve how we interact with our devices.

    摘要: The fragility of traditional metallic or semi-conductive materials hinders their application in flexible electronics. Low dimensional materials including carbon nanotubes, graphene and metal nanowires own outstanding flexibility and have been wildly used to fabricate flexible devices. Bendable/stretchable substrate is another key component of flexible electronics. Various thin polymer films made of polyethylene terephthalate, polyimide, polydimethylsiloxane et. al. were adopted. However, the air impermeability of these substrates will cause discomfort of humanbeing if applied in wearable electronics. Fiber is an ideal substrate for flexible and wearable electronics due to its excellent flexibility/stretchability, superior breathability, abundant microstructure and low cost. Herein, a series of conductive elastomers and strain sensors were fabricated by combining the low dimensional conductive materials with fiber substrates and regulating the microstructure on the interface. With the help of 'twining spring' hierarchical architecture, silver nanowire-double covered yarn (Ag NW-DCY) composite fibers with ultrahigh stretchability were obtained. The conductivity of the composite fibers reached up to 104 S/cm and remained 90% at 2000% tensile strain. Commercial electronic components (LED arrays) were integrated onto a transparent, foldable and stretchable substrate using the composite fibers as stretchable electric wiring, demonstrating the potential application in large-area stretchable electronics. When AgNWs were replaced with graphene, strain sensing fiber with high sensitivity and large working range (100% strain) were fabricated, which enabled the detection of multiple deformation forms, including tensile strain, bending, and torsion. We employ the fibers as wearable sensors, realizing the monitoring of full-range human activities and intricate movement combinations of a robot. Besides, these fibers exhibits fast response, low hysteresis and excellent cycling stability. Another advantage needs to be noted is that these fiber are fabricated by a facial dip coating method, which can be scaled up easily. These smart fibers are of great meaning to the development of flexible and wearable electronics.

    摘要: This case study evaluates a highly flexible screen printed through-hole-via using silver microparticle inks for applications in energy harvesting and storage modules. The printed vias fabrication and reliability are evaluated by means of a double sided screen-printing method and repetitive (cyclic) bending tests. Vias, in 125 μm thick PET, were laser cut (50, 100, 150, and 200 μm nominal diameter) then filled, and simultaneously connected to adjacent vias, by screen printing. To investigate the use of the printed via in a monolithic energy module, the vias were used for the fabrication of a flexible printed supercapacitor (aqueous electrolyte and carbon electrode). The results indicate that the lower viscosity silver ink (DuPont 5064H) does not fill the via as effectively as the higher viscosity ink (Asahi LS411AW), and only the sidewall of the via Conversely, the Asahi silver paste fills the via more thoroughly and exhibited a 100 % yield (1010 vias; 100 μm nominal via diameter) with the 2-step direct screen-printing method. The bending test showed no signs of via specific breakdown after 30 000 cycles. The results indicate that this via filling process is likely compatible with roll-to-roll screen printing to enable multi-layered printed electronics devices.

    摘要: Passive RFID-based technology is a convincing approach to achieve versatile energy- and cost-efficient wireless platforms for future wearable applications. In this paper, we present passive UHF RFID tags integrated into normal work gloves for wearable RFID applications. We introduce embroidery as a new efficient antenna fabrication method for glove-integrated tags as well as establish reference glove-tag antennas from electro-textiles and copper tape. The performance of the three types of glove-tags is evaluated on a male test subject in an anechoic room and in an office environment. Based on the wireless measurement results, the read ranges of the embroidered glove-tags were around 1 meter in an anechoic chamber and in an office, when measured near the human body. These results meet the requirements of many practical applications of glove-tags, although the read ranges are shorter than those of the electro-textile and copper tape tags that showed read ranges of 2-2.5 meters. Finally, the developed glove-tags were successfully tested in actual use situations for identification and access control. These results are very promising, especially considering the cost-effectiveness of embroidered tag antennas and the easiness of their integration into different types of gloves.

  • Numerical and experimental analysis of the effect of metal tie layers on improving electrical properties of gold coated poly (dimethylsiloxane) flexible multi-layered films during folding

    摘要: To improve folding electrical properties of flexible electronics, this study presents a new adhesive stress analysis of depositing an adhesion layer between the conductive film electrode and the flexible substrate during folding test by a folding test platform. The folding test platform controls folding curvature of the flexible conductive substrates, folding times, and velocities in this study. Moreover, the electrical properties of flexible conductive substrates are measured during folding testing by the folding test platform. Eventually, this study successfully analyzes residual strain, adhesive stress, and electrical properties of flexible gold coated on polydimethylsiloxane substrates with chromium, nickel, and titanium adhesion layers up to 0.5/cm folding curvature during folding testing. The chromium adhesion layer had the best performance based on the largest adhesive stress, only 3.74 X resistance increase and 4.53 X maximum resistance up to 0.5/cm folding curvature during folding test by a folding test platform. The experimental result with chromium adhesion layer is consistent with adhesive stress analysis and provides a better adhesive strength between gold and polydimethylsiloxane than nickel and titanium materials for folding test. Therefore, adhesive stress analysis is adapted to evaluate the foldable electronics performance for improving folding characteristics easier.

  • Regional Manufacturing Cost Structures and Supply Chain Considerations for SiC Power Electronics in Medium Voltage Motor Drives

    摘要: With the growth in wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors, specifically Silicon Carbide (SiC), the technology has matured enough to highlight a need to understand the drivers of manufacturing cost, regional manufacturing costs, and plant location decisions. Further, ongoing research and investment, necessitates analytical analysis to help inform development of wide bandgap technologies. The paper explores the anticipated device, module, and motor drive cost at volume manufacturing. It additionally outlines the current regional contributors to the supply chain and proposes how the base models can be used to evaluate the cost reduction potential of proposed research advances.

  • The Implementation of Fundamental Digital Circuits With ITO-Stabilized ZnO TFTs for Transparent Electronics

    摘要: In this paper, several fundamental pseudo-CMOS digital circuits with n-type indium tin oxide-stabilized ZnO thin-film transistors (TFTs) were implemented and investigated. The optical transmittance of circuits varied from 77% to 92% throughout the visible wavelength band. Electrically, the operation frequency of inverters, nor gates, nand gates, D latches, and D flip flops were all found to exceed 10 kHz with a supply voltage of 10 V. Besides, 13-stage ring oscillators could be operated at 42 kHz with a propagation delay time of 0.92 μs when the supply voltage was set as 20 V. Among the state-of-the-art transparent designs, these proposed circuits based on the ITO-stabilized ZnO TFTs exhibited high-speed performance, which were promising as building blocks for transparent electronics with moderate frequency requirements.

  • WaveDAQ: An highly integrated trigger and data acquisition system

    摘要: The WaveDAQ is a full custom, compact and highly integrated trigger and data acquisition system. Despite the decisive urge from the MEG II experiment at PSI aiming at a sensitivity of 6 × 10?14 on the ?? → e?? decay, it is a general purpose device suited for small and medium-sized applications in the range from 16 to about 10 000 channels. It exploits the performance of the DRS4 waveform digitiser with a sampling speed programmable from 1 to 5 GSPS; each input channel can supply HV to arrays of SiPMs and provides a front-end amplification with gains chain in the range from 0.5 up to 100 and GHz bandwidth. Input signals are, in parallel to the DRS4, digitised at 80 MSPS and used in an FPGA-based trigger; fast discriminators associated to each input channel are also used for online reconstruction. This paper presents the WaveDAQ design principles and the results obtained by a demonstrator in the MEG II pre-engineering run in fall 2017 with a homogeneous LXe detector and a plastic scintillation detector both readout by SiPMs and in the tests associated to the ??E-TOF prototype of the FOOT detector.

    摘要: Authors provide a comparative analysis of the results of applying various automatic grouping (clustering) algorithms to a problem of separating homogeneous batches of electrical radio products from a mixed batch. Authors consider opportunities of optimizing the algorithm parameters as well as compilation of ensembles of clustering algorithms. The obtained results demonstrate that the homogeneity analysis of batches of the electronic components installed in real space systems is an actual problem, especially in the case of A high level of integration. Authors substantiate the necessity of centralized acquisition of spacecraft equipment on the principle of equal reliability by creating special production batches manufactured for space industry.

  • Polythiophene–PCBM-Based All-Organic Electrochromic Device: Fast and Flexible

    摘要: A fast and ?exible all-organic electrochromic device, fabricated using polythiophene and PCBM as active materials and plastic substrate, which shows very good power e?ciency as well, has been reported here. The device shows quanti?able improvement in electrochromic performance using parameters like switching speed, coloration e?ciency, color contrast, and cycle life. Spectroscopic investigations have been carried out using Raman and UV?vis to establish a bias induced redox switching based mechanism for the reported improvement in the performance. The device shows switching between magenta (OFF) and transparent states (ON) with a very small bias of ±1 V, an optical modulation of 50% and an absorbance switching contrast of 91%. An enhanced stability for a duration of longer than 2500 s and 250 cycles has been reported with an ultrafast response of few hundred milliseconds. A very high coloration e?ciency of 321 cm2/C is achieved, making the proposed device one of the best reported P3HT-based electrochromic devices.
