  • Modelling the effects of inter-observer variation on colour rendition

    摘要: The colour rendition characteristics of light sources are quantified with measures based on CIE standard observers, which are reasonable representations of population averages. However, even among people with normal colour vision, the natural range of variation in colour sensitivity means any individual may see something different than the standard observer. Modelling results quantify the effects of these inter-observer differences on colour rendition measures defined by IES TM-30-15. In general, inter-observer differences tend to be smaller for light sources with high colour fidelity values, and they are affected by spectral characteristics of different lighting technologies. The magnitude of variation in colour rendition measures, up to 5–10 units in IES TM-30-15 (Rf, Rg), measures is compared with other sources of variability and ambiguity.

    摘要: The prototype of cathodoluminescent bulb for general lighting with field emission cathode on the basis of carbon fiber is manufactured. The bulb comprises a high-voltage built-in AC-DC converter of the electric line voltage and a standard E27 cap. A high frequency converter is used to obtain high voltage. The anode voltage relative to the modulator is up to +20 kV; the cathode voltage is up to –4 kV; the current value is of the order of 1 mA. The voltage converter is located in the bulb cap and around the neck of the glass envelope.

    摘要: Among the different types of lasers and light sources for Communications, new components are becoming more and more important also for Optical Wireless and Optical Sensing applications. In this contribution, combinations of Optical- and RF-Wave Propagation are illustrated, considering also new technologies of lasers and fibre lasers. The presentation includes Optical Wireless Communication (OWC, well known as Free Space Optics (FSO)) as hybrid transmission methods with telecommunication technologies (like WIFI, RF- and Satellite Communications) and also Sensing Technologies (like LiDAR and radar combinations). Important characteristics of physical layer including useful Modulations, Forward Error Correction Coding for single light source are considered. Furthermore, different cases for enhancing the SNR in daytime condition are discussed. The contribution deals with possible fields of application for optical wireless in conjunction with automated driving.

    摘要: The article evaluates the possibility of using halogen lamps, compact fluorescent lamps and LED lamps as direct substitutes of traditional 100 W incandescent lamps for selected residential lighting applications. A single halogen lamp, six compact fluorescent lamps and six LED light sources were examined. A traditional light bulb was also examined for comparison. All lamps operated in three luminaires. The basic evaluation criterion was the illuminance, uniformity and glare limitation in the place of work. It was found that not all light sources can be considered substitutes of traditional light bulbs. In the case of a luminaire made from a translucent material and one luminaire with a reflector, not all lamps allowed to obtain at least the same lighting parameters in the place where visual work was performed, as when a traditional light bulb was used.

  • Robust Wavelength-Converting and Lasing Media from Wafer-Scale Inorganic Perovskites Enabled by a Protective Surface Layer

    摘要: Despite that the inorganic halide perovskites show great promise in wavelength-conversion and lasing applications, the stability and scalability remain as the obstruction toward practical applications. Herein, we, for the first time, employ the wafer-scale inorganic perovskite single crystals to address the above issue. Our spectroscopic analysis reveals that the carrier trapping on the crystal surface is the most probable culprit to hinder the optical amplification for the weak-penetrating one-photon pumping, whilst, the interior of the crystal preserves intact and show low-threshold stimulated emission by two-photon absorption in the near infrared regime. Thanks to the effective protection from the surface layer, the stimulated emission maintains 90% of the initial intensity upon uninterrupted pumping of 4 hours and shows nearly constant threshold upon long-term storage without any encapsulation (> one year). By exploiting a parallel-mirror cavity, an optically pumped wavelength-converting and laser device featuring a spatially coherent output beam is constructed. Our finding greatly advances the development of practical coherent light sources based on halide perovskites.

    摘要: The three primary-color LED light source modules produce a color within the gamut space by the Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) duty cycle. In a host control multiple LED module system, due to the specificity of the three primary-color LED light sources, different light source modules cannot generate the same target color coordinates according to the same set of duty ratio data, thereby causing a color inconsistency in each light source. This paper proposes an algorithm for personalizing the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) values by using the three primary-color coordinates obtained by feedbacks. Through extensive experiments, the algorithm can effectively reduce the color difference produced by different LED lamp beads. The algorithm has a small amount of calculation and can be easily implemented in practical devices.

  • Nanoscale Light Sources for Optical Interconnects

    摘要: This editorial is aimed at addressing two key aspects of nanoscale light sources: (1) low-power optical communication and (2) crystallographic defect engineering for monolithic integration with silicon. We will further discuss opportunities and challenges for nanoscale light sources for next generation, high density optical interconnect. Designing and prototyping light sources with sub light wavelength dimensions has been the topic of keen interest because of their versatility in optical communication. For example, nano light sources can operate at hundreds of GHz [1,2] which is not possible with conventional light sources [3]. In addition, power consumption in interconnects with these light sources can be reduced by omitting the modulator and using direct source modulation to encode optical data [4]. There are a number of nano light sources under investigation: (i) small photonic mode laser [5-9], (ii) plasmonic lasers [10,11] (iii) photonic-plasmonic hybrid lasers [12-15] and (iv) nanoscale LEDs [16,17]. Pros and cons of these nano light sources are discussed below.

  • The JUNGFRAU Detector for Applications at Synchrotron Light Sources and XFELs

    摘要: JUNGFRAU is the pixel detector developed at PSI for SwissFEL. Although the detector development was driven by the SwissFEL requirements, it was soon realized that such a detector could also be of interest for synchrotron light source applications since it would, when operated at high frame rates, significantly extend the count rate capabilities of current-generation single photon counting detectors. In this article, we begin with a basic description of the detector working principle, together with a summary of the detector characterization results. Next, we describe the different JUNGFRAU detector configurations available and their geometries, followed by a description of the detector deployment and operation at SwissFEL. Then, the challenges of using a charge integrating detector at synchrotron light sources are explained, followed by a few examples of the possibilities opened by this kind of detector in such an environment. The last section offers an outlook for the project.

  • Generation of N00N-like interferences with two thermal light sources

    摘要: Measuring the M th-order intensity correlation function of light emitted by two statistically independent thermal light sources may display N00N-like interferences of arbitrary order N = M/2. We show that via a particular choice of detector positions one can isolate M -photon quantum paths where either all M photons are emitted from the same source or M/2 photons are collectively emitted by both sources. The latter superposition displays N00N-like oscillations with N = M/2 which may serve, e.g., in astronomy, for imaging two distant thermal sources with M/2-fold increased resolution. We also discuss slightly modified detection schemes improving the visibility of the N00N-like interference pattern and present measurements verifying the theoretical predictions.

  • Flexible but Mechanically Robust Hazy Quantum Dot/Glass Fiber Reinforced Film for Efficiently Luminescent Surface Light Source

    摘要: Color conversion films with haze have aroused interest for use in surface light sources for display and lighting applications. Surface patterning or addition of light scattering particles to the color-conversion film induces haze and consequently, improves the photoluminescence (PL) extraction. Herein, a CdSe/CdZnS quantum dots (QDs)-embedded glass fiber reinforced siloxane hybrid (QD-GFRH) film with high haze value is demonstrated, originating from refractive index mismatch between glass fiber and methacrylate-phenyl functionalized siloxane matrix. The hazy QD-GFRH film shows a twofold improvement in PL extraction, as well as robust mechanical properties, such as low thermal expansion (13 × 10?6 K?1) and high deformation resistance (E = 11.8 GPa), compared to conventional polymers. Because QDs are chemically dispersed inside the film by covalent crosslinking with siloxane matrix, the QD-GFRH film exhibits long-term (30 days) thermal and chemical stability against heat and moisture conditions [85 °C/5% relative humidity (RH), and 85 °C/85% RH]. Furthermore, the yellow photoemissive QD-GFRH film, with a smooth surface and large scale (A4 size, 210 mm × 297 mm size), is applied as a color-conversion film on a blue light-emitting diode and it covers a large color gamut (107% relative to National Television System Committee).
