  • Arbitrarily shaped homogeneous concentrator and its layered realization

    摘要: Arbitrary shaped N-sided polygonal electromagnetic concentrators with homogeneous properties are proposed and designed based on coordinate transformation approach. In comparison with the reported concentrators, material parameters of the concentrators developed here are homogeneous and non-negative, which make the devices applicable to practical fabrication. The constitutive parameters equations reported here are effective for concentrators of regular and irregular shape, which provide the flexibility for device design. Furthermore, to remove the anisotropic of material parameters, layered structure concentrator composed of only homogenous, isotropic materials are presented based on effective medium theory. Space compressing ratio and concentrating efficiency are calculated to quantitatively investigate the efficiency of the proposed device. The feasibility of concentrator design with ordinary isotropic materials instead of metamaterials would dramatically reduce the fabrication difficulties and move the device a step further towards the practical use.

    摘要: In our hands-on demonstration, we show several objects, the functionality of which is defined by the objects’ internal micro-structure. Such metamaterial machines can (1) be mechanisms based on their microstructures, (2) employ simple mechanical computation, or (3) change their outside to interact with their environment. They are 3D printed from one piece and we sup-port their creating by providing interactive software tools.

  • Wave Propagation Concepts for Near-Future Telecommunication Systems || Manipulating Electromagnetic Waves with Zero Index Materials

    摘要: Zero-index material is a typical metamaterial with an effective zero refractive index, possessing a variety of exotic electromagnetic properties and particular functionalities. We have considered two kinds of zero-index materials with the first one an early matched zero index made of magnetic metamaterial and the second one a radially anisotropic zero index. The magnetic metamaterial-based systems are shown to be significant in wavefront engineering and flexibly tunable by an external magnetic field and a temperature field. The radially anisotropic zero-index-based systems can remarkably enhance the omnidirectional isotropic radiation by enclosing a line source and a dielectric particle within a shell configuration. The physical origin lies in that the dielectric particle effectively rescatters the trapped anisotropic higher order modes and converts them into the isotropic 0th order mode radiated outside the system. The case for the system with the loss is then examined and the energy compensation with a gain particle is also demonstrated.

  • Wave Propagation Concepts for Near-Future Telecommunication Systems || Photon Propagation Through Dispersive Media

    摘要: In the present chapter, we study the propagation of photons through dispersive media, starting from a description of the dynamics of free photons using a Dirac-like equation with an analysis of the energy solutions arising from this equation. A comparison with the case of a free electron is made. We present an analysis of the interaction between photons with the medium considering both a classical and a quantum treatment of light, and also we analyse the propagation of photons along a waveguide where they behave as if they did have a finite mass. As a technological application of the theoretical frame here presented, we consider the use of the properties of metamaterials to control the propagation of waves through waveguides filled with this kind of materials.

  • Metamaterials - Devices and Applications || Active and Tunable Metamaterials

    摘要: In this chapter, we will first present the research progress on the active and tunable metamaterials based on different realization methods, such as varactor diodes, liquid crystals, superconductivity, and structural-shifting structures. Then we focus on the achievements in our research group for the tunable metamaterials by using the ferrite as the substrate of metamaterials. We will present the designs and theories of single-, dual-, and triple-band tunable metamaterials based on the ferrite and the design of metamaterial absorbers based on the ferrite. It will indicate that the proposed tunable metamaterials have many advantages compared with other active and tunable metamaterials.

    摘要: Microstrip fed dual band planner slot antenna using split ring resonators (SRR) is proposed. Split ring resonator acting as a loading element introduces dual bands, which can be controlled by altering the number of rings and the space between them. Wideband is achieved at both resonating frequencies by using the circular shape of SRR and slot antenna. With satisfactory gain and radiation pattern the proposed antenna is suitable for lower range of WLAN and higher range of Wi-MAX and other broadband services. The design and optimization is carried out using CST Microwave Studio. Nicolson-Ross-Weir (NRW) approach is used to verify the Double Negative properties of this structure.

  • SURFACE-PLASMON-POLARITONS AT THE INTERFACE OF NANOSTRUCTURED METAMATERIALS

    摘要: The rigorous modeling and analysis of surface waves at the boundary of two metamaterials are presented. The nature of the phenomenon of the surface-plasmon-polaritons and the in?uence of various parameters on it are investigated. We have analyzed the properties of structures incorporating nanostructured metamaterials. Surface-plasmon-polaritons at the interface of such metamaterials are studied. We demonstrate the ways to control the properties of the surface waves. Each metamaterial comprises alternating metal and dielectric layers. We analyze the dependence of the dispersion characteristics on the materials employed in metal-dielectric compound. The consistency of the dispersion diagrams and e?ective permittivity is studied. The Drude model is introduced in the metal dispersion in order to take into account the e?ects of the structure on dielectric properties.

  • KRIGING-PARETO FRONT APPROACH FOR THE MULTI-OBJECTIVE EXPLORATION OF METAMATERIAL TOPOLOGIES

    摘要: Metamaterials provide the opportunity for designers to create customisable artificial materials by independently tailoring the electric and magnetic response of sub-wavelength geometric structures to electromagnetic energy. Due to the increased complexity of these geometric structures, exacerbated by the increased interest in generating inhomogeneous and anisotropic metamaterials, direct optimisation of these designs using conventional approaches often becomes impractical and limited. In order to alleviate this issue, we propose an alternative optimisation approach which exploits the Kriging methodology in conjunction with an adaptive sampling plan to simultaneously optimise multiple conflicting objectives. Results show the effectiveness of the outlined algorithm in calculating a uniform spread of optimal trade-off designs, balancing the real and imaginary components of the refractive index over a wide range of values.

    摘要: A large-scale lithography-free metamaterial (MM) is presented, which is integrated with a microfluidic chip for effective glucose sensing. MM is composed of hybrid nanopillars fabricated with SiO2 and Au thin-films on Si substrate. It exhibits angle-independence, and polarization-independence, which are the most important factors for color filters for industrial applications. The resonance shift is 56 nm with a stable bandwidth (~30 nm) by varying concentration of glucose solution. The sensitivity is 158 nm/RIU and the corresponding figure-of-merit is 5.3.

    摘要: We develop an effective method for volatile organic solutions (VOS) sensing by using metamaterial with hybrid nanopillars to form a metamaterial-based chemical sensor (MCS). It exhibits large-scale, omnidirectional, and polarization-independence characterizations, which are the most important factors for sensors applications. The experiment results indicate the sensitivity and figure-of-merit of MCS are 71 nm/RIU and 3.5, respectively. The proposed MCS can successfully recognize inorganic and organic solutions for chemical sensors in the UV-visible wavelength range.
