研究目的
To analyze the effects of two distinct therapies in biceps spasticity of chronic hemiparetic patients, focusing on range of elbow motion, torque, electromyography, and mean spectral frequency after photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT).
研究成果
The application of PBMT may contribute to an increased range of elbow motion and muscle fiber recruitment, increases in muscle strength, and hence, to increase signal conduction on spastic muscle fibers in spastic patients. PBMT associated with exoskeleton-assisted functional treatment may represent a new alternative for the treatment of neuromuscular sequelae after stroke.
研究不足
The study was limited by the absence of a placebo group due to ethical committee restrictions, given the complexity of the patient population. Additionally, the small sample size may affect the generalizability of the findings.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A double-blind placebo-controlled sequential clinical trial was conducted with healthy volunteers and poststroke patients. The study included three consecutive phases (PBMT, PBMT + exoskeleton, placebo + PBMT) with a washout period of 4 weeks between each phase.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
12 healthy volunteers and 15 poststroke patients with upper-limb spasticity were recruited. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to ensure sample homogeneity.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Diode laser (easy laser?, clean laser Taubaté, SP, Brazil), exoskeleton (Armeo?Spring, Hocoma), isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex System? 3), and electromyography (EMG System Brasil?).
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Volunteers underwent kinematic range of elbow motion analyses, EMG, and muscular torque peak of elbow flexors during maximum voluntary contraction. PBMT was applied to the biceps brachii muscle, followed by exoskeleton-assisted functional training.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Data were analyzed using BioEstat? software version 5.3. Descriptive analysis, KS normality test, and Wilcoxon statistical test for related samples were used.
