  • Low-loss and broadband non-volatile phase-change directional coupler switches

    摘要: An optical equivalent of the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is of great interest to large-scale photonic integrated circuits. Previous programmable photonic devices relying on the weak, volatile thermo-optic or electro-optic effect usually suffer from a large footprint and high energy consumption. Phase change materials (PCMs) offer a promising solution due to the large non-volatile change in the refractive index upon phase transition. However, the large optical loss in PCMs poses a serious problem. Here, by exploiting an asymmetric directional coupler design, we demonstrate non-volatile PCM-clad silicon photonic 1 × 2 and 2 × 2 switches with a low insertion loss of ~1 dB and a compact coupling length of ~30 μm while maintaining a small crosstalk less than ?10 dB over a bandwidth of 30 nm. The reported optical switches will function as the building blocks of the meshes in the optical FPGAs for applications such as optical interconnects, neuromorphic computing, quantum computing, and microwave photonics.

  • Flexible Filtering Element on SOI with Wide Bandwidth tunability and Full FSR tuning

    摘要: We demonstrate a Silicon-on-Insulator flexible filtering element, relying on two serially coupled micro ring resonators equipped with three thermo-optically tuned Mach-Zehnder interferometers, acting as variable optical couplers. A single electrode configuration is adopted, enabling the low-complexity thermo-optical control of the filtering element for bandwidth and wavelength tuneability. The module's performance has been studied in detail via simulation analysis and the obtained results were verified through experimental evaluation. Wide bandwidth tunability from 9 GHz to 103 GHz is achieved with a power efficiency of 0.284 mW/GHz, while full Free Spectral Range wavelength tuning is achieved with an efficiency of 0.297 mW/GHz. Module's insertion loss lays below 3 dB.

  • A UV-Responsive Multifunctional Photoelectric Device Based on Discotic Columnar Nanostructures and Molecular Motors

    摘要: Orientation control of ordered materials would not only produce new physical phenomenon but also facilitate the development of fancy devices. Discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) form 1D charge transport pathway by self-organizing into columnar nanostructures via π–π stacking. However, controlling the electrical properties in such nanostructures with some direct and instant way is a formidable task for their high viscosity and insensitivity to external stimuli. Herein, the arbitrary control over electrical conductivity of such columnar nanostructures is achieved with UV light by incorporating DLCs with molecular motors. Highly ordered DLC microstripe arrays are generated on desired substrate through a capillary bridge dewetting strategy. The conductivity of the microstripes could be continuously modulated by 365 nm light due to the influence of molecular motion under UV irradiation on the electron orbital overlap of columnar nanostructures. This is so because the disorder degree of the DLC molecules is associated with the intensity of UV light and the doping concentration of molecular motors. Moreover, the device shows memory effect and reversible conductivity change. The DLC microstripe arrays are very promising for the applications in UV detectors, memory devices, optical switches, and so on.

    摘要: An ultrafast electro-optical amplified switch based on chip-on-carrier semiconductor optical amplifier with high optical contrast (33 dB) is presented. Switching times up to 115 ps with small overshoot were achieved by using the multi-impulse step injected current technique. These results are compared with previous preimpulse step injected current technique, and achieve a reduction of the inherent, post switching gain fluctuations without worsening the switching times. In addition, pulse formats for controlling such a kind of electro-optical switches are numerically analyzed and compared with experiments.

  • Coherent control of spatial and angular Goos-H?¤nchen shifts in a metal-clad waveguide structure

    摘要: A metal-clad waveguide backed by a coherent atomic medium is proposed to achieve tunable giant spatial and angular Goos-H?nchen (GH) shifts. With a metal layer of appropriate thickness, a large GH shift can occur simultaneously for transverse-magnetic- and transverse-electric-polarized light beams when the waveguide modes are resonantly excited. The phase change and dip slope of the re?ection coef?cient around the resonance angle are closely related to the system’s internal damping, which depends on the absorption of the medium. Then based on the quantum coherence effect, the spatial and angular shifts can be greatly enhanced by adjusting the parameters of the atomic system. The lateral displacement can also be switched from positive to negative or vice versa via coherent control of the absorption by the medium. Moreover, the dependence of the resonance angle of the guided mode on the refractive index makes the peak position of GH shifts tunable. The proposed scheme provides more ?exibility for manipulating the spatial and the angular GH shifts, and it has potential applications in optical switches, beam steering, etc.

    摘要: We assess through a variational optimization approach the optimal gain-loss profile for a non-uniform PT-symmetric coupler allowing the realization of a binary transfer function and minimizing the deviation of the total traveling light intensity as compared to that holding in a conservative system. We bring evidence that the gain-loss profile fulfilling this requirement corresponds to a non-conventional situation when light intensity is conserved in every point along the propagation distance in the PT-symmetric system. Furthermore, the optimal profile thus found corresponds to a practically important case of optical switching operation achieved with a minimal amount of amplification level. We show that switching architectures using such type of gain-loss profiles are very substantially advantageous as compared to conventional uniform PT-symmetric couplers. Furthermore, this type of optimal profile turns out to be robust with respect to fabrication imperfections. This opens new prospects for functional applications of PT-symmetric devices in photonics.

    摘要: We demonstrate error-free 100-Gb/s optical packet switching with low power consumption by using a combination of a label processor and 8 × 8 broadcast-and-select (B&S) optical switch. To achieve energy-ef?cient label processing, an optical-trigger-pulse generator that consumes energy only for a very short duration is realized, whereas the optoelectronic serial-to-parallel converter used to interface the fast label bits to a slow CMOS processor has been improved to operate with a reduced trigger pulse energy of 0.35 pJ. Moreover, the electro-absorption-modulator-based B&S optical switch is signi?cantly enhanced by introducing a surface ground electrode for eliminating electrical crosstalk and integrated spot-size converters with easy fabrication process. The total power consumption of the full 8 × 8 optical packet switch is estimated to be as low as 27.3 W or 3.4 W/100-Gb/s port.

  • Double Fano resonances in hybrid disk/rod artificial plasmonic molecules based on dipole-quadrupole coupling

    摘要: Fano resonance can be achieved by the destructive interference between a superradiant bright mode and a subradiant dark mode. A variety of artificial plasmonic oligomers have been fabricated to generate Fano resonance for its extensive applications. However, the Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomer systems comes from the interaction of all metal particles, which greatly limits the tunability of the Fano resonance. Besides, only a single Fano resonance is supported by many existing plasmonic oligomers, while multiple Fano resonances mostly occur in complex and multilayer structures, whose fabrication is greatly challenging. Here, a simple asymmetric plasmonic molecule consisting of a central metal disk and two side-coupled parallel metal rods is demonstrated. The simulation and experimental results clearly show that double Fano resonances appear in the transmission spectrum. In addition, the two Fano peaks can be independently tuned and single/double Fano peak switching can be achieved by changing one rod length or the gap distances between the rods and the disk. The modulation method is simple and effective, which greatly increases the tunability of the structure. The proposed asymmetric artificial plasmonic molecule can have applications in multi-channel optical switches, filters and biosensors. Moreover, the controllable plasmonic field intensity in the gap between the disk and rods also provides a new control means for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions and biosynthesis.

  • Stress Test of Nanosecond Semiconductor Cavity Switches with Subterahertz Gyrotrons

    摘要: Nanosecond semiconductor switches based on resonant cavity with reversibly variable Q-factor are the most prospective devices for generating unlimited series of coherent pulses in subterahertz frequency bands. The pulse duration stretches from nanoseconds to tens of seconds for the same device. While the subterahertz switches have already been tested with various continuous-wave generators, e.g. semiconductor transistors and backwards wave oscillators, they are intended to be used with gyrotrons, the most powerful generators of coherent microwave radiation for subterahertz bands. Here we present results of several experiments with continuous wave (CW) and pulsed gyrotrons with frequencies around 300 GHz, pulse durations up to 10 s, and stressful microwave power up to 180 kW. A simple generalized theoretical estimation for the microwave power limit of the switches is provided and found to be in a good agreement with the performed experiments, avoiding blind zones in subterahertz measurements.
