Enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity of graphene/Si hybrid waveguide
摘要: In this work, we experimentally study the optical Kerr nonlinearities of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with enhanced self-phase modulation. In the case of CMOS compatible materials for nonlinear optical signal processing, Si and silicon nitride waveguides have been extensively investigated over the past decade. However, Si waveguides exhibit strong two-photon absorption (TPA) at telecommunication wavelengths, which leads to a signi?cant reduction of the nonlinear ?gure-of-merit (FOM). In contrast, a silicon nitride based material system usually suppresses the TPA but simultaneously leads to the reduction of Kerr nonlinearity by one order of magnitude. Here, we introduce a graphene/Si hybrid waveguide, which maintains the optical properties and CMOS compatibility of Si waveguides, while enhancing the Kerr nonlinearity, by transferring over to the top of the waveguides. The graphene/Si waveguides are measured to have an enhanced nonlinear parameter of 510 W(cid:2)1 m(cid:2)1, compared with that of the Si waveguide of 150 W(cid:2)1 m(cid:2)1. An enhanced nonlinear FOM of 2.48 6 0.25 has been achieved, which is four times larger than that of the Si waveguide of 0.6 6 0.1. This work reveals the potential application of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with high Kerr nonlinearity and FOM for nonlinear all-optical signal processing.

Datasets on extinction coefficients for free space optical link survey and optimization
摘要: Based on visibilities data recorded from 2004 to 2013, the minimum, maximum and mean values of extinction coefficients were determined and analyzed in a monthly basis, a yearly basis and also for the whole period of observation. The extinction coefficients data are obtained for the 1330 and 1550 nm optical wavelengths and may be used inter alia for range and availability analyses of optical link for different weather conditions. The data are collected in the region of Dakar, but approach and model of investigation can be reproduced for other regions in Sahel, and in the World, for optical metrology and allied fields of study.

摘要: The pulse-by-pulse single-shot spectrum measurement for high-repetition rate optical pulses with femtosecond or picosecond pulse width is important for capturing non-repetitive and rare phenomena of substances. Conventional optical spectrum analyzers cannot acquire the spectrum for each pulse at high-repetition rate without missing due to the low processing speed. Several high-speed optical signal processing techniques can help to acquire pulse-by-pulse single-shot spectrum. The high-speed spectrum measurement using a fiber chromatic dispersion-based time stretch dispersive Fourier Transform (TS-DFT) technique is a powerful tool for such measurements. In this paper, we present a record pulse-by-pulse single-shot spectrum measurement for 1 GHz repetition-rate optical pulses with a less than 67-pm spectral resolution based on the TS-DFT technique.

Ripple Suppression in Broadband Microwave Photonic Phase Shifter Frequency Response
摘要: This paper presents a detailed investigation on the cause of ripples in the frequency response of a microwave photonic phase shifter implemented using a 90° hybrid coupler. It was found that an unwanted radio frequency (RF) modulation sideband is generated at the modulator output due to the 90° hybrid coupler amplitude and phase imbalance. This resulted in phase shifter output RF signal amplitude variation and phase deviation. Experimental results demonstrated that incorporating an optical filter in the phase shifter structure can reduce the amplitude variation and phase deviation from 4.2 dB to 2.2 dB and from ±12° to ±3.8°, respectively, over a wide frequency range. A comparison of the loss and the dynamic range of the microwave photonic phase shifter implemented using a 90° hybrid coupler with a conventional fiber optic link is also presented.

On-chip Optical Vector Quadrature De-multiplexer Proposal for QAM De-aggregation by Single Bi-directional SOA-based Phase-sensitive Amplifier
摘要: In this paper, a simple optical vector quadrature de-multiplexer (QD) scheme is proposed for de-aggregating input 10 Gbaud 16/32/64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals into two pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) streams. The proposed QD is based on a single bi-directional degenerate phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA), where the wavelength and the polarization status of the extracted in-phase and quadrature components stay the same as the input signal. Since the proposed QD is realized using PSA based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), it is also possible to realize an on-chip QD system, providing an integrated platform for optical signal processing. Through numerical simulation, the transfer characteristics of the proposed QD system show that the SOA-based PSA has a high phase-sensitive gain extinction ratio of 44.1 dB. The constellations, error vector magnitudes (EVMs), and bit-error rates (BERs) of the data streams after the de-aggregation are numerically investigated to verify the proposed QD scheme. For the 10 Gbaud 16/32/64 QAM signals with an input optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of 25 dB, the de-aggregated PAM4/PAM6/PAM8 signals show 6.1, 5.6, and 8.2 dB receiver OSNR improvements at the BER of 10?3, respectively. Also, to optimize the performance of the subsystem, the BER performance dependence on the phase difference between two arms in the subsystem is also examined. The simulation results reveal that the proposed QD can accomplish the function of optical vector de-aggregation well for the high-level QAM signals. The proposed QD can be applied to information de-aggregation, format conversion, and direct detection for optical vector signals, which may have great potential values for the flexible optical networks.

Microwave Photonic Devices Based on Liquid Crystal on Silicon Technology
摘要: This paper reviews the recent developments in microwave photonic devices based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) technology. The operation principle, functions and important specifications of an LCOS based optical processor are described. Three microwave photonic devices, which are microwave photonic notch filters, phase shifters and couplers, reported in the past five years are focused on in this paper. In addition, a new multi-function signal processing structure based on amplitude and phase control functions in conjunction with a power splitting function in a commercial LCOS based optical processor is presented. It has the ability to realize multiple time-shifting operations and multiple frequency-independent phase shifting operations at the same time and control multiple RF signal amplitudes, in a single unit. The results for the new multi-function microwave photonic signal processor demonstrate multiple tunable true time delay and phase shifting operations with less than 3 dB amplitude variation over a very wide frequency range of 10 to 40 GHz.

Photonic integrated multiwavelength laser arrays: Recent progress and perspectives
摘要: With the significant technology advancement in photonic integration and the demands of compact light sources of multiple wavelengths, multiwavelength laser arrays (MWLAs) can play important roles in high-capacity optical signal transmission, photonic switching, and optical sensing. Manufacturing with semiconductor foundries and the integration with electronic integrated circuits bring not only advanced technologies but also new concepts for realizing MWLAs. This paper will first overview the existing technology development and then discuss the challenges and possible solutions for enabling photonic-integrated MWLAs. The overview will cover monolithically and hybrid-integrated MWLAs. The wavelength registration for both in-plane and vertical-cavity MWLAs will be discussed and compared.

Increase of an Output Optical Signal of an Acousto-Optic Monochromator upon Frequency Modulation of a Control Signal
摘要: An angular aperture of an acousto-optical filter upon a linear frequency-modulated (chirp) control signal has been experimentally studied for the first time. The results of studying the spectral and angular dependences of the spectral transmission function of a filter upon a frequency modulation have shown the possibility of an efficient increase of the output optical signal. The value of the optical signal was increased by 2000 times using the selected design of the acousto-optical filter. This makes it possible to obtain a gain in the measurement time or in the value of the detected optical signal. Such an increase of the output signal upon a chirp control signal is provided by the increase of the angular aperture and broadening of the spectral transmission bandwidth together with the required proportional increase of the control signal power.

Transmission of Higher Order Solitons created by Optical Multiplexing
摘要: The nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT) is a promising tool to linearize the inherently nonlinear optical fiber channel. The NFT transforms a time domain signal into the continuous and the discrete spectrum. The discrete spectrum is composed of an arbitrary number of complex valued discrete eigenvalues and their associated amplitudes. These discrete eigenvalues relate to solitons, which maintain their shape or return to it in an oscillating manner, while passing through the optical channel. Higher order solitons consisting of multiple eigenvalues are complex pulses, which are created and demodulated by sophisticated digital signal processing (DSP) leading to demanding hardware requirements. This paper shows a way to work with higher order solitons in a WDM like fashion by using optical-electrical signal processing and presents boundaries of this method. Optical-electrical signal processing decreases the required electrical and electro-optical hardware specifications substantially and enables to use a simplified DSP. The proposed creation method is subsequently employed to transmit higher order solitons consisting of five QPSK modulated eigenvalues. Furthermore, the optical-electrical processing is benchmarked against the Darboux transformation, which creates higher order solitons purely numerically. The results show that for a 5th order soliton transmission the proposed method can significantly reduce the hardware requirements and DSP complexity.

A dimeric fluorescent protein yields a bright, red-shifted GEVI capable of population signals in brain slice
摘要: A bright, red-shifted Genetically Encoded Voltage Indicator (GEVI) was developed using a modified version of the fluorescent protein, tdTomato. Dimerization of the fluorescent domain for ArcLight-type GEVIs has been shown to affect the signal size of the voltage-dependent optical signal. For red-shifted GEVI development, tdTomato was split fusing a single dTomato chromophore to the voltage sensing domain. Optimization of the amino acid length and charge composition of the linker region between the voltage sensing domain and the fluorescent protein resulted in a probe that is an order of magnitude brighter than FlicR1 at a resting potential of ?70 mV and exhibits a ten-fold larger change in fluorescence (ΔF) upon 100 mV depolarization of the plasma membrane in HEK 293 cells. Unlike ArcLight, the introduction of charged residues to the exterior of dTomato did not substantially improve the dynamic range of the optical signal. As a result, this new GEVI, Ilmol, yields a 3-fold improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio compared to FlicR1 despite a smaller fractional change in fluorescence of 4% per 100 mV depolarization of the plasma membrane. Ilmol expresses well in neurons resolving action potentials in neuronal cultures and reporting population signals in mouse hippocampal acute brain slice recordings. Ilmol is the brightest red-shifted GEVI to date enabling imaging with 160-fold less light than Archon1 for primary neuron recordings (50 mW/cm2 versus 8 W/cm2) and 600-fold less light than QuasAr2 for mouse brain slice recordings (500 mW/cm2 versus 300 W/cm2). This new GEVI uses a distinct mechanism from other approaches, opening an alternate engineering path to improve sensitivity and speed.
