  • Effect of low-energy ion impact on the structure of hexagonal boron nitride films studied in surface-wave plasma

    摘要: A high‐density surface‐wave plasma source is used to deposit hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) films in a gas mixture of He, H2, N2, Ar, and BF3 under a high ion flux condition using low‐energy ion irradiation. The ion energy is controlled between around zero and 100 eV by applying a negative or positive bias voltage to a substrate, while the ion flux is increased by locating a substrate upstream in the diffusive plasma. For ion energies above ~37 eV, the structure of the films depends upon ion energy more than substrate temperature, typical of subplantation processes. As a result, the structural order and crystallinity of sp2‐bonded phase in the films characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction are increased with decreasing ion energy, while the mass density of the films characterized by X‐ray reflectivity is retained relatively high with a slight dependence upon ion energy.

  • Dynamics of Instability in Plasmonic Response of Nanostructured Gold Thin Films on Ambient Ageing

    摘要: Instability in the plasmonic response of nanostructured gold (Au) thin films on ambient ageing has been investigated. Different types of Au nanostructures (island, percolated, and continuous thin film) are obtained at the early stage of thin film growth by variation in film thickness using sputtering technique. Absorbance spectra of as-deposited island Au film shows a systematic blue-shift in the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak position on ageing. The rate of blue-shift in the LSPR peak position is fitted with single-exponential decay function to analyze the dynamics of the plasmonic response. The as-deposited percolated Au film displays a transformation of broadened plasmonic response into a wavelength independent absorbance profile on ageing. The immersion of a new plasmonic band in the absorbance spectra is noted for continuous Au thin film on ageing. The change in plasmonic responses of nanostructured Au thin films on ambient ageing is found to be directly correlated with the re-organization of the surface morphology. Finally, ageing-induced solid-state dewetting and crystallization are found to be the main responsible processes of the underlying mechanism for morphological re-organizations, leading to change in the plasmonic response of the nanostructured Au thin films.

  • RBS/C, XRR, and XRD Studies of Damage Buildup in Er‐Implanted ZnO

    摘要: Accumulation and transformation of defects formed in bulk ZnO crystals at room temperature upon 300 keV Er ions bombardment have been thoroughly examined using complementary techniques: Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry in ion Channeling mode (RBS/C), X-Ray Reflectivity (XRR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Evaluation of RBS/C spectra has been performed using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations (McChasy software). Two defect types have been indicated: point defects (randomly displaced atoms, RDA) and extended ones (edge dislocations, DIS). Depth-distributions of RDA and DIS turned out to be shifted toward deeper regions of ZnO crystals (relative to Er-ions range) while DIS are localized even deeper than RDA. The MC simulations reveal three regions of defects accumulation separated by two regions of rapid defects transformation occurring at a certain critical Er fluence. Strain, suggested to be a driving force of defect transformation, has been determined using simulations of the XRD profiles based on the dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction (MROX software). The presented research can help to better understand the interaction between impurity Er ions and ZnO target atoms during the implantation process. Hence, implantation conditions, for example, for luminescence purpose may now be more efficiently chosen based on the results discussed.

  • Molecular Stacking Effect on Small-Molecular Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Prepared with Solution Process

    摘要: The light emitting layer (EML) is generally prepared by mixing host and dopant to realize organic light emitting diode (OLED). However, phase separation is often observed during the fabrication process to prepare OLEDs depending on the structure of the host materials. In particular, phase separation due to π-π stacking is frequently observed during thermal annealing for the solution process. The annealing process is required for solvent removal and complete relaxation of the molecule. Hence, the materials with a high glass transition temperature (Tg) are ideal because phase separation occurs due to π-π stacking during annealing process if Tg is too low. To understand this phenomenon, we compared two host materials with similar molecular weights but different three-dimensional connectivity, which causes different rotational freedom. Then, we investigated the effect on the device properties depending on the annealing conditions. In both materials, when the annealing temperature rises above 120 °C, the dopant completely escaped from the EML. However, the material that does not disturb the molecular stacking order by annealing due to its limited free rotation through internal bond shows much better device characteristics even after annealing at a higher temperature than Tg. The results show that interdiffusion at the interface and unstable internal density distribution with annealing temperature are responsible for the device degradation behavior.

  • Thickness-Dependent Swelling Behavior of Vapor-Deposited Smart Polymer Thin Films

    摘要: In this contribution, the temperature-dependent swelling behavior of vapor-deposited smart polymer thin films is shown to depend on cross-linking and deposited film thickness. Smart polymers find application in sensor and actuator setups and are mostly fabricated on delicate substrates with complex nanostructures that need to be conformally coated. As initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) meets these specific requirements, the present work concentrates on temperature-dependent swelling behavior of iCVD poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) thin films. The transition between swollen and shrunken state and the corresponding lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry in water. The films’ density in the dry state evaluated from X-ray reflectivity could be successfully correlated to the position of the LCST in water and was found to vary between 1.1 and 1.3 g/cm3 in the thickness range 30?330 nm. This work emphasizes the importance of insights in both the deposition process and mechanisms during swelling of smart polymeric structures.

  • Nanoparticles at Biomimetic Interfaces: A Combined Experimental and Simulation Study on Charged Gold Nanoparticles/Lipid Bilayers Interfaces

    摘要: The poor understanding of the interaction of nanomaterials with biologically relevant interfaces is recognized as one of the major issues currently limiting the development of nanomedicine. The central purpose of this study is to compare experimental (Confocal Microscopy, Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy, X-ray Reflectivity) and computational (Molecular Dynamics simulations) results to thoroughly describe the interaction of cationic gold nanoparticles (AuNP) with mixed zwitterionic/anionic lipid membranes. The adhesion of AuNPs to the lipid membrane is investigated on different length scales from a structural and dynamical point of view; with this approach, a series of complex phenomena, spanning from lipid extraction, localized membrane disruption, lateral phase separation and slaved diffusion, are characterized and interpreted from a molecular level to macroscopic observations.

  • Investigation of Interface Diffusion in Sputter Deposited Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 Thin Buffer Layers on Y-Stabilized Zirconia Crystalline Substrates for Solid Oxide Cells Applications

    摘要: This paper presents the results concerning the investigation of the morphological and structural properties of Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 layers deposited on crystalline (111) YSZ subtrates by RF magnetron sputtering. Room temperature as-grown samples have been annealed at different temperatures from 600°C to 1300°C. Atomic Force Microscopy analysis shows an increase in the average grain size dimensions with increasing annealing temperatures. X-Ray Diffraction measurements indicates a preferential growth of the grains along the (111) direction with a decrease in the evaluated c-axis as a function of the annealing temperature, probably related to an over-oxidation of the samples. X-Ray Reflectivity studies, performed on thin layers annealed at temperatures from 700-1000°C, points out the presence of zones with different densities and roughness at the layer/substrate interface and at the layer/vacuum surface. The behaviour of these zones as a function of temperature has been investigated. The obtained results seem to exclude the presence of consistent inter-diffusion phenomena at the GDC/YSZ interface.
